Public Service Announcement to new nurses (and some experienced nurses):
If a patient tells you they pass out when they get their blood drawn, BELIEVE THEM.
People do not faint like Disney princesses. They fall hard and fast and it’s not easy or safe to try to catch them. Take the extra five minutes and find a place to lay them down before you poke them. The hospital legal team will thank you and so will your lumbar spine.

So I am starting my BSN program in 4 weeks freaking out a little but I do want to specialize in Emergency. What are so outside sources, that I can learn more about to get me ready when I graduate? Thanks

I don’t have any great sources to point you toward, but I would recommend asking your program if you can do a clinical rotation in the ED. It will give you great experience and lots of hands on procedures and also looks great on your resume when it’s time to apply for a job. The most valuable learning happens at the bedside, not in the classroom.

i gave an IM injection and i misjudged the length of the needle/depth of the patients muscle and ended up hitting their bone 😬 the patient was so lethargic and disoriented but i swear to god they turned to look at me like jim looking at the camera in the office 😂
I’ve done that on an alert patient who noticed and then asked me if I just hit their bone.
You are NOT expendable. You are not a martyr. You do not need to sacrifice your health and the safety of your patients because the hospital didn’t have a back up plan for this wave of COVID that we all knew was coming.

Stop getting caught up in the social media of people who think it’s a hoax. Don’t give in to the ignorant bullshit that people are saying. One percent of the population of the United States, alone, is 3.2 million people. That one percent is worth fighting for.
They’ve stopped calling you a hero but that doesn’t mean you aren’t one. You’re a hero every single day you’ve shown up to work in this pandemic. You’re underpaid and under appreciated and yet there you are, every day, helping your patients fight. YOU are the reason your patients get to go home.
Do something for yourself on your day off. Wholeheartedly just for yourself. Not something your kids will enjoy, not something for your partner or parents or siblings or friends. You do you. Take care of yourself.
You are so important to your patients and your coworkers. Don’t give up. These vaccines are a light at the end of the tunnel. We’re almost there.

I was really trying to give 2020 a chance because I had some good stuff happen last week.
Then I got COVID.
2020 can go choke on one.
In her oral dissent to the Supreme Court’s majority opinion invalidating a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, RBG quoted a familiar MLK Jr. line, but added her own coda. “‘The arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice,’” but only “if there is a steadfast commitment to see the task through to completion.”
RBG spent her life pushing to bend the arc. It is now upon all of us.
May her memory be a blessing, and a revolution.

Hi! I hope it’s okay for me to ask a question! I’ve wanted to be in medicine since I can remember. I’m not sure why. I’ve decided (loosely) on nursing or becoming a paramedic. I am so committed to this, but I just want to know how strong does your stomach need to be to do the job?

It’s funny that I got this question today because literally yesterday I had an INCIDENT.. I have been a nurse for ten years. I went back to school and within the last year have become an advanced practice nurse. So I am fancy. I have seen some of the nastiest traumas, I have cleaned a patient covered in his own poo up to his armpits had a patient vomit into my gloved hands. None of that phased me. Then just yesterday, I had a patient who started coughing up phlegm and I gagged so hard into my N95 that my eyes watered and I started sweating.
I’m not sure if you’ve read my blog, but I’ve answered this question in the past. Yes, you need a strong stomach. No, you do not have to be completely immune to all gross bodily fluids and injuries. Every nurse/medical professional has one or two things that they can’t deal with. For me, it’s phlegm. Clearly even ten years later, it’s still phlegm. The only thing I think you really need to be 100% okay with is blood. If the site of blood makes you uneasy, you need to make sure that’s something you can get used to. Everything else becomes easier as you go. Except for phelgm. So sometimes you just gag and carry on with your day.

Taking a side trip for a minute to acknowledge what’s happening in the US.. The way people of color are treated in this country is heinous. I feel ashamed of my demographic and the oppression we’ve created and continue to cultivate. Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd are just the latest examples of the racism that is thriving in this country. They deserved better. We need to do better.
