Attack on Titan Chapter 123: Gives us the question that haunts Mikasa the most in the face of Eren starting the Rumbling, if she could’ve changed something or stopped it from happening

Attack on Titan Chapter 138: Decides to answer that question in a dream/vision of an alternate reality (Hajime Isayama: Master Of twisting the knife even further)

As expected of Attack on Titan, this is beyond heartbreaking. This premise of Mikasa having a dream/vision of an alternate reality where she is happy was used for a Chapter from Attack on Titan: Lost Girls, where Mikasa’s parents are alive and she has a happy childhood with Eren where she’s more expressive and isn’t stoic from the trauma of their deaths. This possible happy future isn’t completely devoid of tragedy, as the big theme of Attack on Titan is “change is only possible with sacrifice”; Eren noting that the sacrifices of Eren and Mikasa running away were that Marley and Paradis went to war and Marley is still going to invade Paradis meaning they’ve abandoned everyone they love back home, in particular Armin who Eren notes is looking for the two of them and condemning Historia to breeding stock. These sacrifices for this happy life are far too cruel and near-impossible for Eren and Mikasa to consider and go through, especially abandoning Armin. 

But, another saddest note for me about this, is that this might be the closest answer we can get about whether or not Eren loves Mikasa romantically; the fact that he would’ve been willing to abandon Paradis, to live with that guilt of abandoning his home just to live in peace with Mikasa, just to make her happy should make it clear...but there’s still that bit of doubt as we still don’t hear him say he loves her. And, with 138’s ending, that lingering vague bit of ambiguity of whether Eren’s true feelings for Mikasa were romantic or just platonic still remains and with it gives me lasting sense of sadness whenever I think about the Eremika Ship.
