Have you looked outside lately?
If I had to talk about a game that I think that should be talked about a little bit more, it would be "Look Outside".
Look Outside is a pixelated Survival Horror RPG Developed by Francis Coulumbe(also Known as Frankie Pixelshow) and published by the oh so popular Devolver Digital. Music composed by Eric Shumaker.
The story follows Sam(or whatever name you prefer) a resident of an apartment complex that woke up during a phenomenon happening outside, after being warned not to look outside by his neighbor Sybil (a peeping tom of sorts, cause she put holes in your wall) he takes a step outside of his apartment. He learns that those who look outside are turned into grotesque feral monsters that he must defend himself against, and learn what's going outside.
The game mechanics are a simple turn based RPG(sort of like Earthbound or Mother), with weapon or elemental advantages that can be critical against certain enemies. The game also offers other mechanics such as: item crafting, weapon degradation, day to night progress, and more. Now you're probably going ask "where's the survival horror aspect?" Well my friend, that's the fun part. There's limited resources to pick up and spend on for your survival that have multiple purposes, like making them into weapons or for healing. Like I said about weapon degradation, you can do special moves with the cost of your weapon breaking and your stamina thus losing your weapon forever. Let alone deciding are you willing to take down an enemy or avoiding it for the time being.
There are certain characters you meet along the way are charming and lovable in their own ways can join you on your adventures, like Ernest the homeless Bard with his mutant rat companion Colonel Squeakums. Some you meet on your way around the apartment, others you meet while you gather yourself at your base(apartment) and have random strangers come to your door and trade items with for more resources. Depending on some you meet, they can be your companions(or roommates) that can bring you along for sidequests that can bring a certain outcome depending on what you decide.
The game progression is based on a timed system(like Dead Rising) time will move on whether you're staying at your base, or taking a dive into the ever changing apartment grounds. You can go back to your base and rest for the night, or spend the entire night wondering the grounds, but be aware for some things do go bump into the night.
The story provides multiple outcomes, depending on what path(s) you choose to follow, thus providing multiple playthroughs. I wish to give an example, but i feel like it would spoil you're experience.
The game is $10(as of right now till January 5th 2026, the game is $7) with it's full edition "The Final Vision" with more bosses and things to explore. I personally haven't experienced it, for i just started and finished before the patch. For what I know, it's pretty much a steal. The designs are amazing, the audio is haunting, the music is fantastic, and the game is a blast. For only $7 (till January 5th) is a steal.
