NYPD officer shot in the head
Queens, New York City – New York Police Officer Brian Moore was shot in the head at 6:15 pm on Saturday night. He is recovering in a Queens hospital after surgery, but is in critical condition. He has been with the NYPD since 2010 and comes from a law enforcement family. He becomes the 5th NYPD officer to be shot since December.
Moore, 25, and his partner were in plain clothes, when they noticed a subject adjusting his waistband suspiciously. They pulled up to him in their unmarked car, exchanged words, and the suspect suddenly opened fire, striking Officer Moore in the head.
Moore’s partner, Officer Erik Jansen immediately radioed for help. Neither officer had the opportunity to return fire, according to William Bratton, New York’s police commissioner.
The suspect fled into an alley. He was arrested approximately 90 minutes later in a house near where he lives, after police conducted house to house searches, deployed helicopters, and could even be seen walking on roofs. By then, the suspect had ditched the weapon, and officers at the time of the arrest did not find it.
The suspect is Demetrius Blackwell, 35. He has an extensive criminal history, including criminal possession of a firearm and robbery.

As a friend remarked this morning, what happens if all police officers become so tense and worried about their own safety that they become unapproachable? What happens if recruitment for police officers falls and fewer good choices are available? We are already seeing the effects of violence on our police in all parts of the country.
Assassinations like happened to NYPD officers Liu and Ramos; multiple arrests of police officers in Baltimore because of one person’s not yet explained death; orders not to protect themselves from rocks and bottles…these kinds of incidents will take a toll on the mindset of police across the country.
We have seen good men in the military and even former military contractors charged with crimes for doing their jobs We are seeing the same thing with police officers. If we want safe neighborhoods, if we want good police officers, we have to stand against the tide of hate and anger by a criminal element AND a government that wants to feed into the violence rather than the solution.
