39. “You’re an idiot. I’ve met smarter sandwiches.” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

One shuddering breath. Two. His chest hitched beneath Erwin’s hand and the commander bit his lip harshly as he swallowed. “Hey, c’mon Levi… The medic team is almost here. Open your eyes, okay?”
Those deep silver eyes fluttered open as Levi’s lips twitched, formed a weak smile. “You fucking idiot…”
Mike snorted beside him, but there was nothing behind it. No humor, no hope. Just darkness and despair. Erwin nearly choked.
“Both of you…” Levi mumbled, and his hand twitched up. His fingers were shaky as they brushed across Erwin’s hand, then settled on Mike’s elbow. His fingers and hand were coated with blood. Not the kind that burned away in steam. Just like the kind that slicked his chest, pumped out from the bloody stump of his leg. “I-” He broke off into a cough, rough and weak, and blood splattered across Erwin’s face.
He bit back everything he felt - all the tears and fear and terror as he clutched Levi’s shoulder. “You what?”
“I think… you’re both idiots. I… I’ve met smarter sandwiches. F-fuck… I’ve met s-smarter… rocks.”
Loud jangling notes filled the room and Levi nearly tripped over every God damn thing in the way before he snatched up the phone, heart in his throat as he stared at the lit screen. Call from Erwin. Levi swiped the screen and pressed the phone to his ear, breath caught in his throat. “Hello?”
“Levi.”
Oh thank God. It was the paranoia in him that made his heart lurch every time Erwin or Mike called him when they were supposed to be on a flight. It was nerve-wracking, knowing they were going up encased in tons of steel that, by all rights, never should have been able to leave the ground in the first place, on top of how many things could go wrong throughout those long hours they were cooped on-board.
“Hey, Erwin,” he managed, voice a little shaky from the lingering apprehension but the relief was too overwhelming to keep it there for long. “Miss me yet?”
“We’ve been missing you every day.”
“Good. Give those higher ups fucking hell when you get back for making you leave and come back so close to Christmas.”
“Ah, about that…” This time it was his stomach that moved and it sank so far it might as well have merged with the filthy earth beneath the apartment complex and rotted away. Hell, it certainly didn’t feel like it was inside him anymore.
There was a rustle, then another, deeper voice joined Erwin’s, smooth whiskey where Erwin’s was honey, and it carried less authority and a more Southern drawl. “Levi, they pushed our flight back. I don’t think we’ll make it back in time.”
Mike’s sweet voice crushed him with those words and he let his shoulders sag as he drifted back to the couch and sank down, abruptly too weak to stand. “Ah… Okay.” He couldn’t do anything. What good would screaming and wailing and cursing whatever god had decided to screw them over, this time in the worst fucking way possible, do? Nothing, absolutely nothing.
“Darlin’,” Mike murmured quietly, his voice bitter music to hear, “I’m so sorry.”
“Me too, Levi.”
“It’s not your fault,” he muttered as he drew a pillow to his chest and crushed it close - it was obviously the best he was going to get on this cruel, lonesome Christmas Eve. “It’s not like you two can control the weather.”
“Still…”
“Just… when are you expected to take off?”
“We don’t know yet. But it’s late over there Levi. You should go to bed. I’m sure you haven’t been sleeping well.”
“Fuck you, Erwin,” Levi huffed as he glared at the clock and pressed the pillow tighter to his chest, “It’s not even ten.” That was true but there was no denying the deepened bags beneath his eyes or the way he’d been yawning all day as he’d cleaned, determined to have a distraction that lasted for a few hours and left their flat presentable and immaculate. And he hadn’t exactly slept the night before between the call that had lasted until one in the morning for him, just like they had every day for the last week. His jaw split into another as he stared at those stupid bright red numbers and Erwin and Mike must have heard it because they hummed.
“Lie down, Levi,” Mike murmured, “We’ll be there soon. Maybe early in the morning if the weather lets up.”
Levi grunted but obliged them. He stretched out on the couch and dragged a silky-soft blanket down over his body as he squeezed the pillow, lips turned down and a brutal ache clawing at his chest. “I wish you guys were home.” A rare admittance of weakness, one he wouldn’t be particularly proud of later, but there nevertheless. He craved their strong arms and familiar presences. The apartment was too big, too empty without them, and he had no clue how to fill the space. Hanji and Isabel and Farlan hadn’t been able to do much, the way they fit into the apartment nowhere near right.
“Us too. I promise we’ll make this up to you.”
“You’d better,” Levi mumbled as his eyes fluttered shut, the cocoon of warmth and softness too irresistible. But he still forced his thick tongue to cooperate and his weary mind to make conversation with his lovers. It lasted until their voices lulled him and his words faded away into silence and soft, even breaths and his hand slackened and fell away, the phone with it and the call lasting for a few minutes longer before his boyfriends hung up with smiles - but he was oblivious and unaware to all of that.
Warm arms curled around him and his tongue refused to cooperate as gray eyes blinked open. Blond hair, two heads of it - one a shaggy mess, one perfectly combed. Perfect contrast, he thought hazily. He couldn’t move his arms - they were heavy with sleep and fisted into the soft fabric he was nestled against. “… Mmmirwin?” he mumbled clumsily and they chuckled.
“We’re home. Go back to sleep.” He just nodded dumbly and pressed his face closer to the solid body that held his - it smelled like spice and home. He vaguely felt those slow, methodical steps as they carried him, then those arms settled him in the middle of something warm - the bed he dimly realized as his grasping hand closed around a pillow. Far away rustles, then closer ones, and then two warm bodies closed in on either side of him. A kiss to his forehead, a kiss to the nape of his neck.
“Merry Christmas, Levi,” Erwin breathed.
“Happy Birthday, sweetheart,” Mike murmured. Levi fell back asleep with a smile on his face and two warm hands on him, both over his hip. ’S nice…
