Electrical Safety Month - Home Hazards to Avoid
May is Electrical Safety Month 2015! In celebration of this holiday, started by Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFi), this week’s blog will focus on electrical hazards in your home and what you can do to avoid them.
Electrical fires are scary and extremely dangerous, but fortunately very preventable. After reading our blog, take a look around the ESFI website for more information on electrical safety concerns.
Here are four hazards to be on the lookout for:
Circuit breakers that trip, fuses that blow repeatedly or over-use of extension cords – old wiring may need to be replaced
Worn out aluminum wiring – copper wiring is best
Arc faults – leading cause of electrical fires; install AFCI outlets and breakers for arc-fault protection
Ground faults – install GFCI outlets in areas near moisture for protection against potentially fatal hazards of electric shock due to a ground fault.
Counterfeit electrical products – only buy electrical products like extension cords, power strips, night lights, etc. from reputable retailers
Electrical surges – whole home surge protection will protect your home from dangerous and costly power surges, such as powerful lightning strikes
Milestone Electric technicians are well trained to detect all electrical hazards. While you as a homeowner may be able to sense an electrical issue because of circuit breakers tripping or fuses constantly blowing, much more lies behind the walls that are not readily visible.
