“you’re my flame in the dark. we chase away the shadows around each other.”
Is castlevania worth watching? I am afraid I never played the games.
I think it is. But bear in mind it is unbelievably gory, so if that bothers you, you should skip it. It’s also really, really short (4 episodes). From what I understand, the current season is supposed to be a prologue for an 8 episode second season. To be honest, my foray into the Castlevania universe was choppy, so I don’t know that I’m the best person to ask for a game-to-series comparison. I remember watching my older guy cousins play through it when I was a teeny thing, just wanting the big boys to hang out with me. Word through the fandom, though, is that it’s being well-received by old school and new school fans alike.
Warren Ellis is the writer, and if you read comics, you know who he is. There are problems with it -- I personally wanted to see more character development and interaction, but what can you really do with 4 episodes? Also, and I find this to be true of Western animation, the fight scenes, while beautiful, do not approximate the God-like heights of something like Fate/Zero or Fate Unlimited Budget or whatever the hell it’s called. Still, they aren’t bad, if a bit inconsistent.
Now the good. It’s funny - something I’m told is obtained from the first group of games for the NES. It’s irreverent. And it delights in its own absurdity. I think these things are all to the good. The characters are all charmers, if personifications of standard tropes. You have Trevor Belmont, the drunk shithead who used to be the baddest badass around and has fallen a few levels in badassery of late. He doesn’t care about much, but he gets himself a New Lease on Life and begins to care. There’s Sypha Belnades, the beautiful magician who is anything but a distressed damsel. She sort of hates Trevor at first but they become Friends through Ass-Kicking. And then there’s Adrian (who the fandom calls ‘Alucard’ but I don’t because Hellsing). Adrian is the gorgeous aristocrat who Bucks Against Tradition (I won’t say more because of spoilers). Anyway, they are the most ass-kickingest OT3 in a long time.
The art direction is stunning, especially the backgrounds. The animation isn’t breathtaking, but it’s still pretty fluid and better than a good clip of what’s out there. Castlevania is a property with a rich, rich history and well-developed mythology in terms of the games, so there’s a lot of material for the series to delve into if it wishes. Thus far, it’s a great bit of Gothic horror, so if you’re into that, you should check it out. And if you hate it, it’s less than 2 hours of your time.

International Night
I love it when I go to things I usually enjoy and end up having a panic attack and a half cause I get to run into the people who made my life a living hell for months but THEY get to have a great time cause they were sweetness and light to everyone else 😊
