Festival in the Desert. It was in 2009 I picked up my camera and it was here at The Festival in the Desert where the flame of passion of photography was ignited.🔥 What an experience ! To see the Blue Man of the Desert ( Touaregs) majestic riding their camels, their outfits, the colours, the leather, the jewelry and music 🎵 it was 3 days of pure delight❤️ The Festival in the desert was an annual concert in Mali, showcasing traditional Tuareg music as well as music from around the world. The first Festival took place in 2001 in Tin Essako, then in Tessalit in 2002, and in Essakane from 2003 to 2009. Essakane 2009. Unfortunately this Festival is no longer as it became to dangerous, even when we where there, we heard a few tourists where kidnapped😣, just hoping that one day it will happen again...#mali #festivalofthedesert #essakane #desertfestival #travelphotography #travel #travelgram #africatravel #malitravel #music #experience #bucketlisttravel #bucketlist #documentaryphotography #documentaryphotographer ©️@ingetje_tadros (at Essakane) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAmjzQkA7Qn/?igshid=cskhtfy0201o
My musician brother sent me down a rabbit hole tonight looking at photos from the January 2009 Festival au Désert in northern Mali. It was an incredible few days of performance – stars like Salif Keita onstage, but then, even better, many musicians from across West Africa gathering in the dunes to play music together, audience or not, until the sun came up. It was magic. This was the last Festival to be held out in the desert, in Essakane, before it was moved into Timbuktu. Since 2012 the Festival has been in a state of perpetual postponement due to instability in the region. (Their website has dates for the 2015 festival crossed out and instead says "Still in exile", which breaks my heart.) But many of the musicians associated with the Festival have been consistently on the road, touring as the Caravan for Peace in Africa and the US. These photos: dancing to Salif Keita's performance; Keita onstage; the crowd; Khaira Arby onstage; musicians by firelight; members of Tuareg band Shallo (plus baby); views of the crowd. I spent my 25th birthday on this trip, a joint assignment for @thenationaluae @time @globalpost – many thanks to the editors who made this possible @clintmcleandotcom @markrykoff @andy_meldrum. #mali #timbuktu #essakane #festivalaudesert #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere (at Essakane)
