Yuri Kochiyama's family suffered as a result of the Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. After the War, Yuri and her husband moved to Harlem, New York, where she became an activist, who fought alongside Malcolm X until his death (she was right next to him when he was assassinated). Throughout her life, she continuously fought as a figure against injustice, and served as a mentor to several generations of human rights activists and freedom fighters. She passed on June 1st, 2014, at the age of 93. This photo was taken by our friend @anrizzy, who had the honor of meeting her several years prior. May she rest in power, and her legacy lives on. | #essenticppl | 2010 | #essentic #essenticnyc #yurikochiyama #restinpower
