This fic is entirely 100% @iberiandoctor ‘s fault. She made me beta all these glorious Les Mis fics (well, I forced myself upon them, rather 😉)

In the last week before Trick or Treat reveals, I made the mistake of saying, “...and now there's a story in my head for Esteliel's prompts-- Javert chases Valjean across the barricades, and due to taking a wrong turn somewhere they end up at a costuming party, and people mistake them for very dedicated LARPers. and i have no time at all to do this, because i haven't even seen the bootleg once!”

Because Jay is the best enabler, she says, “that’s a cute story!” and also “dallas is really not that different from the other musicals, only very US-centric” and “It’d be fine with just UST”

I don’t... actually... remember writing most of it? but I know I watched parts of the bootleg, and Jay sending me all these other glorious crack fics💦💦💦For the longest time it was just called “Derailment” which was boring, and didn’t really capture the spirit in which it was written.

Also, boy, did I not know when to let things go. I decided pretty early on that it was set in Paris, Texas, just so I could make jokes about Uber because it wasn’t so ubiquitous in Europe. But what would I do about the silver candlesticks? (I decided to not bother with the candlesticks and glossed over the part where catholics are a minority.) I hope the setting came across well!

This is in tribute to Esteliel’s heart-breaking (but still fluffy) Christmas-themed fic, “Juniper and Camphor” (which can be found here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/5510168), and to cheer myself up from the sombre thoughts of Valjean’s and Javert’s mortality (as per the theme of this fic). In preparation for the upcoming Christmas, Valjean is fixing up the creche for Cosette’s children again and Javert’s defiance (re: Valjean’s life) continues to know no bounds. Luckily, this defiance worked (for the time being).

The words in the speech bubbles are as follows:

VALJEAN: Oof! Javert, you are heavy…

JAVERT: You cannot possibly love him more than I do.

CRUCIFIX: Alright, fine, you win! Geez…

lol excellent. yeah, once the valvert comparison occurred to me, i couldn’t stop seeing it that way. it’s maybe a little spoilery to say so, since the movie tries to keep it a mystery whether or not the criminal is actually a bad guy or not for a while, but i feel like it’s pretty predictable that he’s not, and imo the whole movie is sort of more enjoyable when you know he’s not, so i don’t feel bad spoiling that aspect of it.

also, regarding the tied-up feeding gif, yeah it’s amazing and there are a handful of other “wait is this a fanfic?” moments in this movie.

I wish I could talk about Valjean (and Fantine! gad I love Fantine) more easily, but everything there is both very Complex and like..borderline Triggery in many ways , so I have to be in exactly the right mental space to talk about it

but be sure just because I'm not talking about him doesn't ever mean I don't think he's one of the most amazing characters in fiction with one of the best and Truest stories ever
