The Key in the Hand (2015)

Chiharu Shiota

Berlin-based Japanese artist

With her site-specific installation The Key in the Hand (2015) representing Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale, Chiharu Shiota captures viewers’ attention with hundreds of keys hanging on a web made in red string. The artist is known for her unique choice of material and construction of special structures through weaving.

“A thread can be a cut, a knot or a loop, or can be loose or sometimes tangled. A thread to me is an analogy for feelings or human relationships. When using it, I do not know how to lie. If I weave something and it turns out to be ugly, twisted, or knotted, then such must have been my feelings when I was working.” Shiota told Art Radar Journal.

Chiharu Shiota’s show runs till 22 November, 2015 at the Japanese Pavilion of 56th Venice Biennale.
