I didn't like the first episode of the second season of ODAAT and that’s why
I'm engaging through a very tricky battle right now and ready to get all the hate you guys have to give me but first let me explain.
The culture war over religious morality has faded; in its place is something much worse.
During the campaign, commentators had a hard time reconciling Trump’s apparent ignorance of Christianity and his history of pro-choice and pro-gay-rights statements with his support from evangelicals. But as Notre Dame’s Geoffrey Layman noted, “Trump does best among evangelicals with one key trait: They don’t really go to church.”
* * *
Since the early 1970s, according to W. Bradford Wilcox, a sociologist at the University of Virginia, rates of religious attendance have fallen more than twice as much among whites without a college degree as among those who graduated college.
* * *
For decades, liberals have called the Christian right intolerant. When conservatives disengage from organized religion, however, they don’t become more tolerant. They become intolerant in different ways. Research shows that evangelicals who don’t regularly attend church are less hostile to gay people than those who do. But they’re more hostile to African Americans, Latinos, and Muslims. In 2008, the University of Iowa’s Benjamin Knoll noted that among Catholics, mainline Protestants, and born-again Protestants, the less you attended church, the more anti-immigration you were.
* * *
Whatever the reason, when cultural conservatives disengage from organized religion, they tend to redraw the boundaries of identity, de-emphasizing morality and religion and emphasizing race and nation. Trump is both a beneficiary and a driver of that shift.
So is the alt-right. Read Milo Yiannopoulos and Allum Bokhari’s famous Breitbart.com essay, “An Establishment Conservative’s Guide to the Alt-Right.” It contains five references to “tribe,” seven to “race,” 13 to “the west” and “western” and only one to “Christianity.” That’s no coincidence.
Very interesting. So it is perfectly possible to accept or even be a gay person, and at the same time be a racist.
Note also the appeals to tribalism, a supposedly more virtuous pagan past. Those who have studied the ideology behind National Socialism even briefly know exactly what I’m referring to.
Sadly, in the desperate search for a tribe, alt-right members fall upon race identity, being “white”. (Which they don’t even get right, but that’s another story.)
Pay attention to what the article says, too, about white Democrats and about under-30 African-American activists. That’s important. (Churches were desperately crucial to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, in case you didn’t already know.)
I used to agree with John Michael Greer that racial identities won’t survive the ongoing collapse of Western civilization; now I’m not so sure. He predicted that the disenfranchised unemployed whites and disenfranchised inner-city African-Americans would band together -- which has not happened. If anything, it’s even less likely than when he wrote those words.
Of course, that’s a straightforward extrapolation from what’s happening now. Straightforward extrapolation has a poor record for predicting the future. This all could change and mutate into quite different forms in the next century or two. Wish I could be there to watch it; from an anthropological-historical point of view, it’s bound to be fascinating (if horrifying, too).
Peter Beinart frets that this whole thing will make American politics more and more vicious (since we’re not getting that “God is love” message from Christianity). And he’s not the only one.
Barbara Reynolds, a civil-rights activist and former journalist, wrote in The Washington Post. “Unfortunately, church and spirituality are not high priorities for Black Lives Matter, and the ethics of love, forgiveness and reconciliation that empowered black leaders such as King and Nelson Mandela in their successful quests to win over their oppressors are missing from this movement.”
I’m sure many religious people will agree. I will snicker, of course -- Western-style Christianity maintained itself by forcibly converting other people, to the point of seizing the children from indigenous peoples and giving them to white couples to have their “inferior” cultural identity erased.
And as we see here, all that has not protected orthodox Christianity from the ravages of time and cultural change.
Former Olympic sprinter Tommie Smith reflects on his legacy and the resurgence of activism in sports.
