Book Review in Mid-American Review

I've got a book review in the current issue of Mid-American Review. I reviewed Fires of Our Choosing, an excellent debut collection of stories from Eugene Cross, out now from Dzanc Books. I can't recommend Fires of Our Choosing enough. The stories and writing are simply stunning. Thanks again to Mid-American Review editor Michael Czyzniejewski for assigning this book for review. By the way, has anyone read "Fires of Our Choosing" by Eugene Cross?

I shelved it a few weeks ago in the library and I can't get it out of my mind.

Would anyone recommend it?

 4th grader's poem about gangster tacos, about burrito breath, and with one of the greatest last lines in poetry ever:  "you know the one with the air-brushed wolf on it."

Nathan, the poet, is a 4th grade writer, from Bluebonnet Trail Elementary in Austin, Texas, who participated in a year-long Badgerdog Literary Publishing workshop. (www.badgerdog.org) Eugene Cross was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and received an MFA from The University of Pittsburgh. His collection of short stories, "Fires of Our Own Choosing," is out now from Dzanc Books. His stories have appeared in Narrative Magazine (which named him one of “20 Best New Writers” and his story “Harvesters” a “Top Five Story of 2009-2010”), American Short Fiction, Story Quarterly, among other publications. His work was also listed among the 2010 Best American Short Stories' 100 Distinguished Stories. He currently lives in Chicago where he teaches in the Fiction Department at Columbia College Chicago.
