The EU Commission has secretly set in motion a potentially massive reform of the GDPR. noybs first overview of the proposed changes.
Reading the first internal draft, it is clear that the potential damage to the GDPR (see details below) would be huge. Large parts of the draft violate European Conventions, the Charter of Fundamental Rights or settled Court of Justice case-law. Whether this is intentional or due to the fast pace of the work and resulting poor quality of the draft remains open. Brussels insiders reported that certain units only had five (!) working days to comment on a 180+ page draft law.

Death by 1000 cuts. While many changes sound technical, there are the rights of people behind each "definition" in the GDPR. The changes range from the cutting back on what is even considered "personal data" and therefore protected, all the way to limiting the "right to access" so that employees, journalists or reseachers would be unable to access their own data anymore. Changes also allow lenient access to "pull" data from smartphones, PCs or connected devices or largely allow companies to use personal data from Europeans for (commercial) AI training. While companies often argue that the GDPR would be a "burden" the reality is that not even 1.3% of all GDPR complaints lead to a fine. In Ireland only 0.6% of fines were so far paid.

Das Urteil
Der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte hat Griechenland verurteilt, das Recht auf Leben verletzt zu haben. Ein weiteres Mal. Die Angehörigen der Ertrunkenen haben sich bei PRO ASYL für den jahrelangen Einsatz bedankt. Für die Betroffenen bedeutet dieses Urteil immerhin ein klein wenig Gerechtigkeit - verbunden mit der Hoffnung, dass irgendwann keine Menschen mehr im Mittelmeer sterben müssen, weil ihnen niemand zur Hilfe kommt.
Der Straßburger Menschenrechtsgerichtshof hat der aktuellen Aussetzung von Asylverfahren in Griechenland vorerst Einhalt geboten: Mit zwei einstweiligen Anordnungen schützt das Gericht Menschen, denen der Zugang zum Asylverfahren verwehrt wurde. Im Interview ordnet Minos Mouzourakis, Rechtsanwalt der PRO ASYL-Schwesterorganisation RSA, den wichtigen Erfolg ein.
Das Verbrechen im April 2018
Im März 2018 erreichen drei Menschen mit letzter Kraft das Ufer der griechischen Insel Agathonisi. Zwei von ihnen halten jeweils ein totes Kind im Arm. Sie sind die einzigen Überlebenden eines Schiffsunglücks. Sieben Jahre später urteilt der Europäische Menschenrechtsgerichtshof: Die Küstenwache hätte ihre Angehörigen retten können – und müssen, wie uns das Urteil nun heute bestätigt.
Das Schiff wurde vor dem Untergang nicht nur von griechischen Behörden gesichtet und fotografiert, sondern auch begleitet. Vor zwei Jahren ertranken rund 650 Geflüchtete vor der griechischen Stadt Pylos, nachdem die Küstenwache über Stunden Hilfe verweigert hatte. Im Kampf um Aufklärung und Gerechtigkeit erzielten Überlebende nun einen wichtigen Teilerfolg: Die Staatsanwaltschaft hat Anklage gegen 17 Bedienstete der Küstenwache erhoben.
