I was re-reading a few pages of Unnatural Selection, especially the part containing notes on unused ideas and dialogues, when I found this:
Here’s a more readable transcript:
C’rizz: I had a pet once. A Gnube. Funny little thing. Covered in spikes. Beautiful colours when it was happy or sad; when it was interested in something. Lost all its colour when it was bored. Had to keep it stimulated all the time. Hated it when I went out.
Charley: What happened to it?
C’rizz: Stayed out too long one day. Came back and it had lost all its colour. You couldn’t see it at all. I never found it. I suppose it starved to death somewhere in my home.
Doctor: And how unthinkingly cruel.
C’rizz: Cruel? It was just a gnube.
I don’t really know what to think about this, but I’m a bit sad it wasn’t included in the final version of The Natural History of Fear, especially considering how little we know about life in the Eutermes zone.
