After separating from the Navy as a corpsman, he’d covered bits of his medical tuition with odd jobs—drawing blood, bartending—and after he’d learned to terminate pregnancies as a resident, he’d started doing that, too, spending his weekends in Susquehanna County. Belief in bodily autonomy never factored in. What he needed was work.
