The Brotherhood of the Travelling Warlords

Thank you everyone who helped send me armchair travelling around the world (and in some cases, into the past as well). It was a lot of fun to research these places and try to figure out what our warlords would want to check out while they were visiting.

Event summary...

Fifteen postcards written, as requested by fourteen people.

Warlords on the move: Mitsuhide (4), Nobunaga (2), Shingen (2), and Masamune (2) win the frequent flier honors, but Sasuke, Yukimura, Keiji, Mitsunari, and Kennyo also got to do some sightseeing as well.

Of all the places requested, I had been to three: Times Square, Washington DC, and Dublin Ireland. I've been to Chicago before, but not during the 1896 World's Fair.

Warlord who gave me travel-envy. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, New Orleans and Prague, so I would have stowed away in Mitsuhide's suitcase without question.

Places I learned about that I now want to visit: Vigan City and Hoi An Ancient Town.

Place that was a nope... well, we sent Sasuke to an active volcano...

Request that gave me the most difficulty. Rome in 2020, only because I had to do some research to figure out what the COVID restrictions were at that time.

Favorite finished postcard design. I really liked the way Paris France, 1900 turned out. The artwork and graphic design of the era is so very much in my aesthetic sweet spot.

Easter eggs... all of Mitsuhide's postcards have a faint hidden graphic underneath the text of the postcard.

Favorite postcard text - I think I might go with Mitsunari on this one. I figured of all warlords, he'd be the one who started out writing his postcard too big, and be forced to make the lettering get smaller and smaller until he had to write up the side of the card (also he was writing the postcard while on a tour bus for part of the time, so it was a little messy for that reason too). Plus, I just enjoyed thinking of him trapped in Trinity College library and not worried at all about it. Him losing his shoes was a running joke in his longfic, so I stuck that in there too.

Mistakes... I think my biggest planning mistake was not figuring out in advance a couple of the world building issues. Would these warlords be going to a recipient who was currently living in Azuchi (or Kasugayama)? Since some of the requests were anon, or from posters I don't know very well, I made the assumption that the postcard recipient had indeed been previously wormholed into the Sengoku. Also, how would the warlords deal with a language barrier? With that one, I figured that for any warlord travelling to a timeline past (or just around) the 20th century - they could probably find someone who spoke their language (both Kennyo and Masamune went to World's Fairs where there was a Japanese installation). But when Shingen went to Ancient Greece and Mitsuhide went to the Golden Age of India, I figured they would just have to do their best with pointing and making up a sign language as they went along (they're both smart men, they can adapt!). Masamune had less difficulty in medieval Poland, not because he found someone to translate, but because he travelled into a siege situation and I figured he was well enough acquainted with battles that he'd do ok ... I er, quite possibly overthought these.

Along those lines... while I had fun picking out handwriting fonts for the warlords, I made a few mistakes early on... Mitsuhide's for example, took up too much space and I couldn't fit as much content on his cards (and so of course, he was the most requested warlord).

Curious about the handwriting I picked? I was pretty random about it... mostly it was a combination of what felt right to me, plus whether or not it would fit on the postcard. Shingen is more romantic, so his handwriting is flowy, whereas Nobunaga's takes up a lot of space - but I had to balance an authoritative font with being able to include a decent amount of text. I figured that Mitsuhide would think faster than he writes, so his is a little more careless looking, and Sasuke would print, because he's used to writing lab reports. And of course, once I picked a handwriting font for one postcard, I kept it through the rest of them.

Heeeey so with the 6th anniversary going on, I really wanted to take some time to read the events connected to it. It seems pretty awesome! So in light of that, I've written a translated summary of the first event "Break the Shadow" (it would have taken too long to do a line-by-line translation). I also have the prelude up for the sequel "In the Daybreak". Unlike previous events, "Break the Shadow" doesn't have an epilogue because the story directly leads into "In the Daybreak". Hibiki couldn’t quite do the math to figure out just how much time he’d lost to Yuta. Especially because it somehow seemed wrong to count those ten days as equal to the days he spent frozen, unaware. Maybe he could weight each day based on how often they came into the forefront of his mind.

Those ten days felt like ten years-- a dwarfing proportion of his lifetime. And those ten years felt like ten hours-- a long night’s sleep, at most. But then there was the three months they dated, and the three years between meeting and making up when he spent every moment trying to deal with the addiction he’d caused, the way his passing presence had taken over his life bit by bit. The more Hibiki pondered it, trying to weigh his lost hours on the scales of eternity, the more this... hollow dread grew in his gut.

“Hibiki Shiryo” as a person is inextricably tied to “Yuta Agawa.”

“Yuta Agawa” was a person in his own right. A bad person, maybe, but a person nonetheless-- he was an Olympian, a philanthropist, an innovator. He was also a predator, a creep, a violent abuser. He was someone who knew everyone, even if they didn’t know him. That’s why, as soon as the verdict came through, people stopped biting their tongues. They didn’t have anything to be afraid of anymore. The devil was in chains, banished to hell for twenty to life.

Hibiki wasn’t even twenty yet. Nineteen. Nineteen, and being torn between labeled an angel or branded a demon. Hibiki wouldn’t even be forty if Yuta got his minimum, and Yuta himself would be just into his fifties.

Nothing fixed itself now that he was gone. No matter how much Hibiki had held out for that to happen, it hadn’t. The threats were now mixed with letters of admiration, but they were still threats, and still violent, and still sometimes made Hibiki sick to his stomach. And now they were from others, not just Yuta. The paparazzi didn’t stop hassling him-- in fact, it just got worse. It was a regular occurrence, now, that someone was tossed out of the club for trying to sneak pictures of Hibiki while he danced, and they’d even had the bouncer start using a handheld metal detector to make sure no one could sneak in hidden cameras or bugs. It got bad. Too bad. They’d given him a “vacation,” meaning they told him to stop coming in indefinitely. And then the drugs... well, that didn’t get better, either. Because every time he took even one less pill, he felt miserable-- sick to his stomach, anxious, dizzy, exhausted, twitchiness, the whole barrage of withdrawal at even just a lower dose. But he couldn’t stay on that dose for long, because even then his body would crave more, so that it was all he could think about, so that he couldn’t function without it. He was going through months worth of pills in weeks, and he couldn’t stop it.

But why should he even bother? If he tried to get off of them now, he’d end up back in the hospital, or dead. And it wouldn’t be quick-- it’d be painful, drawn out... he’d have time to doubt, and take another pill. And then what? He’d be back at square one.

And who should he even ask for help, especially knowing he doesn’t want any? Everyone... he was a burden to everyone. The people who believed him he’d already bled dry, and the people who doubted him or resented him or hated him would rather choke on their help than give it. Even Mashi. Mashi, who hadn’t answered a call or a message since the interview went public, who had been his best friend in high school and the one to help him through the breakup. Who he’d secretly hoped would help bring all of this to light.

He had no place to go outside the apartment-- everywhere he left a contrail of reporters and curious onlookers. His coworkers wanted nothing to do with him, especially the ones who were more secretive about their work. And, of course, aside from work, what did he really have? The flower arrangements that had suddenly begun to shoot to life throughout the apartment were beginning to die, with no successors to replace them. Countless creations every day turned into one or two, and then only that amount in a week, his will to craft them shriveling up like the flowers themselves.

It’d always been a useless hobby, anyway. No one cared about ikebana except him-- it was a forgotten craft, and he was clinging to the last moments of it, just like he clung to the last memories of people long dead, the people he grew up with, the people who once filled his life. Was there anyone left alive who remembered his parents aside from him? Even worse, how much did he actually remember? The memories grew cloudy, his minds eye going blind with the passing years.

Hibiki gave up on the math and curled up next to Secret, petting the innocent kitten and trying to focus on the gentle hum of his purrs rather than all the other things that struggled for space in his mind. The numbers were... worse than he expected. He couldn’t count hours, or days, or even years.

Yuta stole his life.

Summary of Event: Meeting with Priarch

Edarien Secariot and friends came to meet with the Covenant of Ash with the purpose of hiring them to find out more and possibly contain a mysterious substance called the Ink, which has a corrupting influence on people. Whilst Edarien, Llorne, Marius and Ghost talked upstairs, members of both companies mingled downstairs, discussing and sharing information while Teagan made sure refreshments were had by all. 

Friday night’s meeting will include sharing what all was learned and setting up the next mission to retrieve ingredients to create another one of the powerful artifacts - the Paintbrush - that was given over into Marius’ care, which can cure people afflicted with the Ink.

Echoes of Emperors

The Zandali Dominion first met at the coastal outpost, called over by their communicator trinkets, and they’d discuss their mission before heading off into the jungles of Zuldazar in search of a rumored artifact hidden between the veil of greenery. 

Making their way down the trodden path, they’d all see to a camp set within the jungle prior to their mission, rummaging through their supplies in preparation to cross the river. However, they’d find something skulking about their supplies - In their search they would uncover an adolescent ravasaur eating their rations... One amongst them putting an end to the supposed creature without knowledge of what may come of such an action. Afterwards, they’d make their way across the river and ventured deeper into the jungle where darkness began to shadow the moonlight above the canopy. 

Now, they’d all stop once spotting abnormal structures within the darkness which melded with the very environment itself. A perfect adaptation of nature brought into fold with a sedentary life.

However, as they neared, and Antu’jin Xen’aji made himself heard, they’d receive a spear flung at them from afar which landed right at the feet of the Overseer himself. Eventually however, they’d spot a man standing between the trees going by the name of Talkal, the leader of a band of Gonk followers who invoked the wrath of nature upon those who harmed it needlessly.  And as fate had it, one amongst them did so... To the adolescent raptor earlier who had gotten lost, the Claws of Gonk themselves sought to retrieve and return it safely to their protection. However, an ultimatum was set forward to the Dominion as their own people began to surround them.  “Bring me the one who has done wrong, and we will set the cycle in place again.” Said Talkal to Xen’aji, right before Ver’di would take initiative and move to take his place.

Talkal didn’t hold any mercy for the Gurubashi Stalker, raising him by his shoulder, and the primal dug his talon-like claws into the neck of Ver’di before the primal made his words heard by all.  “You may look for the artifact, but know it means nothing. It is a simple trinket from the Empire of Old.” Then Talkal went to retrieve his spear, and made his way off to retrieve the body of the lost amongst their pack.

They’d all arrive to the location they sought out, finding a peculiar scene - A mural behind an altar of wood and bone, the depictions showed an array of colors, a people which began with one dream, and in the end they’d fade into slumber.  All of them would see upon the center of the altar a golden ravasaur skull, decorated with both jade and obsidian respectively. As they neared, they’d see a list of a hundred names, Talkal appearing to be the eight to last on the last. 

However, a small discussion set out whether or not they should even take the artifact, and they’d begin to realize it was not necessarily theirs to take. In turn, an offering of repentance was asked of them all by the Antu’jin of the Dominion. Most gave their blood to return what was taken, some gave trinkets, and others gave coin, but in the end there were three who stood at the altar deciding whether or not they’d still take it and risk the vengeance of whatever they may have wronged.
