Heeseung always joked that the universe had played the funniest prank on him.
His first children?
Twin boys.
Loud.
Fearless.
Born only minutes apart, but somehow capable of making twice the amount of chaos every single day.
By the time they were five, the living room looked less like a family home and more like a miniature construction site. Plastic race tracks snaked across the floor. Monster trucks sat upside down on the couch. Buckets of LEGO bricks threatened everyone's bare feet. Superhero capes hung off dining chairs. Tiny soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, even foam swords, occupied nearly every corner.
Then, five years later...
Their baby sister arrived.
The only girl.
The youngest.
The princess everyone had secretly been waiting for.
"She's gonna play soccer with us," one twin had proudly declared the day she came home.
"No," the other argued. "She's gonna race cars."
Heeseung laughed.
"We'll let her decide."
Turns out...
She decided on both.
Mostly because she had inherited every single toy the twins had ever owned.
At twelve months old, she knew exactly where the basket of Hot Wheels lived.
She'd crawl over.
Dump the entire thing upside down.
Then she sits happily, surrounded by tiny cars, humming to herself.
"Mmmmmm..."
She'd pick one up.
"Da-da-da-da."
Roll it across the floor.
"Guh!"
Giggle.
She loved knocking down towers made of giant LEGO bricks.
She loved bouncing foam balls.
She loved making Batman and Spider-Man kiss because she had absolutely no understanding of action figures.
The twins thought it was hilarious.
"Daddy!"
One brother laughed.
"Batman's in love!"
"Nooo!"
The other clutched his head dramatically.
"Spider-Man's blushing!"
Their baby sister squealed.
"Bababababa!"
Then, they smashed the superheroes together again.
Every afternoon, the twins insisted on taking her outside.
"Princess ride!"
They shouted.
Their prized possession was a bright red battery-powered Road Truck Electric Toy Car.
Technically...
It seated two.
Unofficially...
It seated three.
The brothers would carefully buckle their little sister into the passenger seat first.
Always first.
One twin climbed into the driver's seat.
The other squeezed beside him.
"Ready, Princess?"
Their sister clapped both hands.
"Mmm!"
The truck lurched forward at an impressively slow three miles per hour.
The twins made exaggerated engine noises.
"VROOOOOOOM!"
Their sister copied them.
"Vmmmmmm!"
Neighbours smiled every single time.
Because those boys drove like they were transporting royalty.
If the truck hit the tiniest bump,
"You okay?"
If she dropped her stuffed bunny,
"Stop! Stop! Emergency!"
If the sun were in her eyes,
"Turn around! She's squinting!"
Their little sister had no idea how adored she was.
She even had her own car.
A tiny pink-and-red Cozy Coupe.
The twins treated it with almost military respect.
"No touching."
"That's her car."
"Hands off."
Even Heeseung wasn't allowed to move it without permission.
One Saturday morning, Heeseung decided the family needed groceries.
Simple trip.
Milk.
Bread.
Fruit.
That was all.
The twins immediately wanted snacks.
Their little sister sat happily in the shopping cart.
Her chubby legs kicked back and forth while she hummed.
"Baaa..."
Everything was normal.
Until...
They passed the toy aisle.
She froze.
Completely.
Her little eyes widened.
Her mouth formed a tiny, perfect "O."
"...?"
Heeseung noticed immediately.
"What is it, baby?"
She slowly lifted one finger.
Pointing.
Not at the trucks.
Not at the dinosaurs.
Not at the building blocks.
But...
An entire aisle filled with pink.
Plush unicorns.
Baby dolls.
Tea sets.
Sparkly pretend makeup.
Princess castles.
Tiny purses.
Stuffed bunnies wearing bows.
It was like she'd discovered another planet.
Her breathing got faster.
"Mmm..."
Her tiny fingers opened and closed.
She leaned so far forward in the shopping cart that Heeseung had to hold her little waist.
"Oh?"
She stared.
And stared.
And stared.
Like she'd never seen anything so magical before.
Which...
She hadn't.
Their house was almost filled with hand-me-down toys from her brothers.
Not because anyone avoided buying girl toys.
Simply because...
She'd never shown interest before.
Now she looked absolutely enchanted.
Her little hand reached toward a fluffy pink bunny.
"...Da?"
Then toward a princess doll.
"...Mm?"
Then toward a tiny tea set.
"Ba..."
She couldn't decide.
She wanted...
Everything.
The twins watched her quietly.
Then one whispered,
"I don't think she's ever seen this many girl toys."
The other looked around the aisle.
"Oh..."
He suddenly noticed too.
There were race cars.
And robots.
And action figures.
Those had always surrounded her.
But this?
This was entirely hers.
Her own world.
Her own choices.
She made the tiniest distressed sound.
"Nnnnn..."
Because she couldn't touch all of them at once.
One hand reached for a unicorn.
Then a doll.
Then a purse.
Then another stuffed animal.
Tiny panicked babbles spilled out.
"Bababa..."
"Mmmm!"
"Guh!"
Her brows pinched together.
She looked ready to cry from pure overwhelm.
Heeseung's heart absolutely shattered.
"Oh, sweetheart."
He lifted her from the cart.
Immediately, she buried her face into the giant pink bunny she'd been staring at.
She hugged it.
Hard.
"Mmmmm..."
Like she'd waited her whole little life for something soft and pink.
One twin looked up.
"Dad..."
"Yeah?"
"Can she get it?"
The other twin interrupted.
"Can she get all of it?"
Heeseung blinked.
"...All of it?"
Both boys nodded without hesitation.
"She's never had to choose before."
"Everything she has is ours." "Our old stuff."
They weren't complaining.
Not even a little.
They sounded...
Sad.
For her.
The baby looked between everyone.
Still hugging the bunny.
Then, she reached toward a tiny princess doll.
"...Da."
Then the tea set.
"...Ba."
Then sparkly blocks.
"...Mmm."
She was trying so hard to ask.
Even without words.
Heeseung smiled.
"Which do you want, baby?"
She answered by patting every single toy within arm's reach.
The twins burst into laughter.
"She said yes."
"She wants the whole aisle."
Heeseung sighed dramatically.
"I think..."
He looked at his daughter.
Who was now kissing the bunny's nose.
"...I have absolutely no self-control."
Twenty minutes later...
The shopping cart no longer contained groceries.
It contained,
A princess castle.
A tea set.
Three stuffed animals.
Two dolls.
A pretend vanity.
Sparkly stacking cups.
Pink blocks.
A tiny stroller.
Hair bows.
A plush crown.
A unicorn blanket.
And a toy shopping cart.
The groceries had somehow become secondary.
When they got home...
She sat in the middle of the living room.
Surrounded by pink.
Completely still.
Almost like she couldn't believe any of it belonged to her.
The twins sat beside her.
"So..."
One brother picked up a tiny teacup.
"Pretend tea?"
She gasped.
Actually gasped.
Then clapped.
"Da!"
He poured invisible tea.
The other twin wore the plastic tiara.
"Am I pretty?"
Their sister giggled so hard she fell backward.
"Babababa!"
Soon...
Batman was drinking imaginary tea.
Spider-Man rode the unicorn.
The race cars are parked outside the princess's castle.
The LEGO people became royal guards.
Everything blended.
Just like their family.
Later that night...
Heeseung carried his sleepy daughter upstairs.
She refused to let go of the pink bunny.
Her tiny fingers were wrapped tightly around one floppy ear.
Half asleep, she hummed softly.
"Mmmm..."
He kissed her forehead.
"You know..."
She blinked up at him with heavy eyes.
"You never had to ask."
Another sleepy hum.
"If you even look at something..."
He smiled.
"Daddy's probably already putting it in the cart."
The twins overheard from the hallway.
"That's true."
"So true."
"She's spoiled."
Heeseung laughed.
"She is."
The baby opened one sleepy eye.
Then hugged the bunny tighter.
Satisfied.
Safe.
Loved beyond measure.
Her brothers kissed both of her cheeks before climbing into their own room.
"Goodnight, Princess."
"Love you."
She answered the only way she knew how.
A tiny smile.
And one quiet little babble.
"...Ba."
It wasn't a real word yet.
But everyone in the house understood exactly what she meant.
