Nugu GG of the Week #786 : Banana Girl (part 2)

Next is the 2nd season of Banana Girl with Nam Minseol. She was the longest tenured member for being in the group as its lead for 2 years, 2005-2006. Also for some reason her era is the only one on streaming services 👀

So because of this I'm giving her 2 parts for the week.

Her hit song and lead single from her album was Bubi-Bubi. The song continues with the popular europop dance feel that you would hear from Lee Jung Hyun and Uhm Jung Hwa, the mothers of the genre for kpop, however while Ahn Suzie had a little more of whimsical feel on Hip Song, Minseol has a more serious vibe. Feels more mature. Especially paired with MV with everyone grinding on each other on the club while the main guy receives a box with a 🍌 in it. Guess that's on brand from Banana Girl.

Nugu GG of the Week #801 : GWSN (part 2)

After a stellar debut with their first mini album they returned several months later in early 2019 with their 2nd mini. The single, Pinky Star (Run), continues their space girl vogue energy with a bit more aegyo on the vocal delivery and choreo. The MV was fine, dancing on labyrinth looking building in the skies however it is a bit of down grade. Their debut MV was much more vibrant and colorful, the plain cement beige coloring wasn't adding to the energy of the song for me visually.

B-side chosen is Miss Ping Pong 🏓 throwing shade at miss I produce our groups songs at Cube Entertainment??? Perhaps 💅 song is very addictive with its production, the xylophone (?) melody reminds me of Rugrats a little. Otherwise a loud and fun track.

Nugu GG of the Week #803 : GWSN (part 4)

GWSN returns with their fourth mini album, luckily not pulling a Red Velvet or Ateez by continuing their album series of "The Park In The Night" with a 4th entry but leaving that as a trilogy album series and starting fresh with this fourth album titled "The Keys".

This fresh start is lead with the single Bazooka, the fan favorite single. This song makes a slight shift in their image with having more mature styling and makeup. The MV definitely had Hobgoblin by CLC on the moodboard with the similar singing around neon lights and plants which is fine. However the song still had their vibrant sound still feeling like a GWSN track, the group had a strong identity and kept on their path. It feels like natural growth for the group without being too jarring of a transformation.

The b-side chosen is Tweaks. A nice moody song for the gay clubs.

Nugu GG of the Week #624 : Berry Good (part 5)

Solos 🧐

Final single chosen is Accio, released in 2020. Another summer anthem, the song feels like a return to form because it does kinda have the Christian horse girl summer vibes while also still have a tropical feel on the production as well.

Final b-side chosen is Give It Away. Nice upbeat dance track with a loud and fun synth beat with some tropical house beats, definitely feels like a cool blend of Momoland and Wa$$up (y'all still streaming Color TV?).

The group released a few songs afterwards but then ultimately disbanded in 2021. We thank you for your service 🫡

Post disbandment 4 members still put out solo music

Kim Nayeon has released a few tracks, Love Story Under the Umbrella was released in 2024. A nice groovy retro vibe, Yukika would be proud of her daughter!

Taeha dropped a solo album as well. She also is a daughter of Yukika and divinvg into the New Retro Wave, Dive in Love is a solid bop!

Seoyul who is AOA Yuna sister btw, is now a soloist E.SO. She's released numerous singles. Perfect Crime is a good track with an eerie feel, kinda perfect for October.

Gowoon released music under name for a time before rebranding herself as ISHA. She's very mellow pop/r&b with her songs but her song, See, is a nice Latin feel track 😔 🤟 Mi Gente Latino !

Lastly E.SO & ISHA make music together sometimes, a mini Berry Good Reunion 🙏 their song Meow was released back this year in June, the MV was them just hanging out on a beach vacation. Song was a chill summer track.

Nugu GG of the Week #691 : Cignature (part 2)

Next single chosen is ASSA. The song continues with their girl crush mixed with cutesy bubblegum pop vibes. This song is a bit more noisy but girl groups have fun noise music in comparison to their male counterparts 👀 plus we love the catchy hook "eomeo what's going on" very on par with Sohee's eomeo part from Tell Me 🧐

This was also their let's wear suits era, we love girl groups in suits.

Next b-side chosen is Villain, not too much to say on it, it's just a strong girl crush b-side.

Nugu GG of the Week #688 : Irris (part 3)

Next song is Bye Bye. This kinda serves as their "ballad". However not a true ballad in sound, the song is slow but it's production starts out very slow/minimal and then gains momentum into the chorus to have this loud grounding beat drive along the melody.

Song got an MV, lots of fireworks, posing by trucks and riding around on scooters.

Nugu GG of the Week #686 : Irris (part 1)

Irris is a 4 member girl group that debuted in 2022. The members were I.L., Liv, Yunseul (all 3 of these ladies are former members of RedSquare, y'all still streaming Colorful?, and Good Day, y'all still streaming Fly Away?) plus member Nina.

Their group name is an acronym 🙄 I'm copy and pasting this from their Wikipedia, which hey rare for nugus to have official Wikipedia 👏 :

The group's name, Irris is a double entendre, with its two abbreviations being "I is the Reflection of Reality and IllusionS" and "I tRuely Realized that I can be all colorS". The group name is also inspired by the Greek mythology Iris, the goddess of the Rainbow. They said that the name contains the aspiration to emit infinite light based on the symbol of connection with the soul, freedom and liberation

Whatever all that means...

The group debuted with Wanna Know, we got a nice catchy brassy horn leading the production, very Worth It by Fifth Harmony, and overall nice mature girl crush vibe.

Also the budget for the MV was phenomenal, their label definitely gave a lot of effort to make these ladies look good

Nugu GG of the Week #685 : RedSquare

RedSquare is a 5 member girl group that debuted in 2020. The group consists of Green, ChaeA, Ari, Bomin (all four of them are Good Day members, y'all still streaming Rolly?) and then 5th member Lina. Originally Heejin of Good Day was going to be the 5th member but left the group prior to debut and was replaced by Lina.

The group debuted with ColorFull. With lyrics mentioning every color of the rainbow, strong vocals and a good hand clap/feet stomp melody (very Hollaback Girl coded) for the percussion beat we got ourselves a classic song too good for nugudom. The girls also had a decent budget and editing team for the MV as well.

Member Lina also had a solo debut prior to group under the stage name Blenn.

However by 2022 the group ended switching labels and then disbanded / rebranded into a new group called Irris.
