This one is through Peeta's PoV so I promise this is argueably worse than the OG one. Upside is I got to write some Delly! Which helped to make it worth it. Hope those craveing the angst enjoy this. And with luck this will be the end of this plot bunny/alternate universe for me.
This idea came to me I think, octorber of last year so as much as it makes me want to cry I am glad to have finally finished it.
Also yes: I did tag everthorne and Gale for a reason. Avoid like the plague if you have a problem with it. They are not the focus here, but they are presant and portrayed as happy here. So my everthrone antis can also continue on your day without reading this better off for it, too.
Delly's footsteps slow their pattern of hitting the dirt ground and she gently grabs his hand with hers.
"Peeta, I'm glad you are letting me hang around while rebuilding the bakery. Spending time with you after so long has been nice. Really nice."
Knowing anything he says could give a wrong impression, Peeta smiles politely and nods to agree. Delly decides to throw all of her cards on the table and leans into him for a kiss which Peeta gently steps back from. Putting a gentle hand on her shoulders to make his message unmistakable.
For her part, Delly doesn't seem upset. Disappointment shades her features but not any anger or sadness. It relieves him a bit, seeing she didn't take it too harshly. Even if there is no small amount of guilt pooling in his gut. Still, it was nice to see she wasn't terribly hurt. That was the last thing he wanted.
"Sorry. I just- I had to try. Only once, tell you before I moved on." Delly explains.
"No, no don't be. Delly if I could just feel the same way you do I would. If it were up to me, I promise you it'd be different. Please know you are amazing, alright? Don't let me not being able to get my head out of my rear end make you think otherwise." Peeta explains.
A smile is flashed at him, and they continue to walk through the path covered with the forests downed leaves. For a moment he thinks he couldn't get more lucky to have Delly as his closest friend. Peeta wishes it were as simple, as easy to forget he'd already given his heart away and to be with her instead. It isn't, and he has tried and tried hard to let himself fall into something with her. To pretend otherwise would be a lie. Delly deserved much, much better than that.
Katniss Everdeen did exist, and even though she had chosen Gale, he couldn't love anyone like he had loved her no matter how much he wanted to or tried. Despite truly trying in the last few weeks to let this time with Delly grow something it was fruitless. Peeta wished it was as easy as choosing her.
"Peeta, can I say one last thing? Then we can talk about anything you want, forget this ever happened?" She asks, and he nods. She meets her eyes with his. "Katniss…she's happy, Peeta. And I wish that you could be that way too. I know you are content, and at peace with how things are. But you've earned more than that, whether I'm involved or not. Just think about it, okay? Maybe start looking at the road ahead of you. Deciding what you want it to look like."
He can't stop himself. Peeta doesn't want to make these promises cause he doesn't feel confident in fulfilling them. But Peeta decides, he is trying. Reopening the bakery is the start even if doesn't feel as successful as he'd hoped. "I promise, Dells."
Inside he knows, as usual, she is right. Katniss, for the last few weeks as far as he understands, has been on an extended hunting trip with Gale, thoroughly enjoying herself and filled with life if the look she had while smiling as they packed their gear the morning they left was any indication. She's never been more where is meant to be. Somehow she'd scratched something pleasant for herself after it all. With that, it would be logical to make an effort to have something like that for himself.
Peeta was sure he wouldn't get that far. Though he's trying, Katniss could be confident in choosing what she wanted, or at least not be affected by his reaction. And that Delly wouldn't worry about him sulking himself to an early grave.
"Good!" Delly trills, loosely taking his arm. When he stays silent, she offers more chatting to continue and lighten the conversation. "Is this rumor about a new cinnamon roll recipe I am hearing about true? If so, I volunteer as a taste tester."

He nodded. “Let’s make a list, then.”
“Okay, let’s do that.” As she waited for him to get some paper from the guest room, she returned to the kitchen and made a fresh pot of coffee.
“I feel like a failure.” He sighed as he came back and sat the pad of paper in the middle of the table.
“It’s not a failure, Gale.” She poured them each a cup of coffee. “I felt like it was expected. Friends, dating, lovers, married. I never thought there would be anything else.” She shrugged. “Not that it mattered. I liked you then, loved you. I love you now.”
He sniffed and wiped at his eyes. He so rarely cried. In fact, Katniss was sure the last time Gale shed a tear was when Becca was born. “I’m sorry, Katniss.”
“Why?” She asked softly, standing and taking his arm when he didn’t answer. “Gale?”
“We could have spared all this. I shouldn’t have—”
“Shouldn’t have what? Married me? Had babies with me?” She touched his cheek. “I loved our life. Every minute of it. It’s nothing to apologize for.”
He grabbed her hand. “I’m sorry I didn’t let you about Madge sooner.” He swallowed hard and let go. “I can’t do this right now, after all. I’m going to try to sleep for a bit.” He walked to the back of the house and closed the guest room door hard.
Katniss stared down the hallway for several moments before she went up the stairs to her room and threw herself across the bed.
(so yea. I decides instead if writing a whole second part- cause I do not have time, sadly- this might be good to release my thoughts about this and put it to bed forever. Despite it still being so awful and sad for Peeta, somehow I feel this is more fair to him? I don't know. Let me know what you all think . This has just been in my brain since I wrote Hindsight and it felt good to rectify some of the issues I have with it.
Also, yes. This DOES have some Everthorne, consider this your fair warning to keep scrolling if this would bother you. And to read if that IS your cup of tea. Oh! Same Peeta warnings apply as well. While this fic doesn't vilify him, it is angsty for out favorite baker. If you don't want that I'd suggest you not read as well.)
-Peeta, would eventually leave. Not imedently but it he would eventually think watching the woman he loved so happy with someone else hurt a little too much. Not that he isn't over the moon for her, he is. And in a lot of ways he is thrilled Katniss found her way back to Gale. He just can't handle seeing it so often. Or pretending it doesn't hurt when he is always gonna have feelings for her.
-He says he is going to an art show in D2. Which is, actually true. He doesn't mention he doesn't intend on returning.
-Guilt almost chokes him not saying goodbye to Katniss, but when he looks at her smiling and happy with Gale it's had to say anything that would ruin that.
-Delly is the only one he says goodbye too. She's been his closest confidant and he tells her he is sorry he can't return her feelings. She comforts him, telling him she's excited to find someone who does and Delly pointedly tells him she hopes he can too.
-Peeta almost wishes that was possible for him as he leaves.
-Katniss and Gale are enjoying a hunting trip when Peeta leaves, and she notices something as soon as they return to Victors Village. She doesn't pay much attention till she knows he should have been back from 2 some time ago.
-When a month has gone by, she assumes Peeta has no plans on coming back. It hurts, and she misses him. Gale tries to comfort her though and it's enough to remind her that she made a choice, and Peeta had no obligation to stick around.
-Gale helps her to keep busy and she always misses him, Katniss decides Peeta mush be happier. If he wasn't, he would have come back. Hopefully, Katniss thinks that maybe he's found someone to love as much as he can.
-Peeta however, is alone on a train. Hoping she isn't thinking about him too much.
Pairing: Mainly slight Everthrone. Everlark exists but...just don’t if you ship Everlark. Please avoid the frustration. Rated K.

It does not vilify any characters but...this fic gives Peeta the shaft and as a lover of Peeta myself I DISLIKE what I do to him here. Forgive me, and please continue scrolling if you can’t bear to see Peeta hurt.
This was both an experiment and a way to get an idea out of my head. @ladynephthyss and I were talking about platonic Everthrone and I just got this idea of this and couldn’t stop myself from making an attempt to write it even though I REALLY dislike it. However, if a little Everthrone is your thing? This IS for you. And I’m literally never ever doing this again so. Enjoy. I know I didn't XD. Oh well. Learning experiences.
Also. This was rushed through editing so...admittedly, not my best work. Again..just forgive me here you guys I’ll make it up to you I PROMISE-
It shakes her when she and Peeta find him getting off the train from two, a single bag with him. A gentle hand of Peetas on her shoulder helps pull her away when she is frozen by Gales grey eyes meeting her across the clearing. It's blistering hot out, and when they return to the shade, Katniss tries to forget what she saw.
Gale doesn't make this easy, though. The next day, he meets her on the way to the forest, and they explode.
What she screams, or what he does, is forgotten when Katniss decides to go back. Whatever life he has in 2 will be waiting for him, and she'll wait till he returns to it.
Several days later, Gale comes to try and apologize. She says silent, though she can feel his honesty. Her heart knows it is obvious he didn't intend to take her sister from her, even if he was easier to blame after the fact. The next morning when he finds her by the primroses, he talks and talks. Really though, all his words say is I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry-
Katniss leans on him, just slightly. Their shoulders bearly brushing speaks a thousand words. Her way of saying, it's not you're fault, it's not your're fault-
The ice breaks, and the next morning when he meets her by the forest, they go together. Easy patterns come back to them, and suddenly, they are hunting partners again. Friends.
Peeta doesn't pretend not to notice as it becomes a routine, and when he asks about it, there is no anger or hurt. They've grown back together so much, and she isn't sure how to react when he says, completely honest, that he will be here for her. As whatever she wants when she chooses for herself. Letting go of her hand after a brief, comforting squeeze over a shared dinner.
In the morning, she goes with Gale hunting again, and they don't do much of it. Instead, they walk, they make it to the lake and take in the sun and water. He catches her up on his life, complaining about his colleagues in D2, explaining the work being done there. She tells him that things are better here, returning better than they had been before. By the time their adventure ends, the stars are out, and she falls asleep on the couch as opposed to the bed she was used to.
Peeta does as promised, never becomes angry or dejected. They still are friends, even talk across the small circle in Victors' village as the days go by, and Gale seems to take his place in District 12 again. The two of them even still share breakfast before she goes hunting occasionally. But he never does stay at night anymore- because she never seems to get the chance to ask him.
Once or twice Katniss finds him to help soothe her nightmares before she can't continue seeking him out. Not when all she does is leave him.
All the growing together they have done stays, but she can tell it stops.
However, she and Gale continue to be close, and for a few moments each day, running with him in the forest as they hunt, things have almost stayed the same as before the games. His presence was familiar and expected, comfortable to her utmost shock.
Of course, things still hurt and had changed. Going home was the worst. Sae and her granddaughter were familiar visitors, as were Haymitch, Gale, and Delly. But at night, she was alone with her nightmares and without her sister. She survives the worst of the night terrors and the panic attacks, though—long since accepting their permanence. Learns to grab sleep like a starving thief and how to lock herself alone till her mind clears from paranoia.
Gale always comes back, though, and their routine ground her.
Without much fanfare, Gale moves in when Peeta decides he should return to his own him. They sit together, and as District 12 becomes alive again, they talk about things around them. Their slow-growing district. It is quiet, but Katniss doesn't mind it, having his companionship. He isn't bothered by the little things she does other times, the knitting that's become soothing, or her writing.
Whatever they are seems to set like cement. Quicker than she realizes, they are holding hands and hugging routinely.
Peeta becomes closer with Delly as the weeks move forward, she can't help but notice. Part of her wants so badly for him to dive headfirst into whatever he has with her, love her with impunity and forget their brief moment in the sun after the rebellion. He deserved to be loved in return for how fiercely he loves. The kind, outgoing Delly seems like she would make him as happy as Katniss wishes he could become.
He never does. The two become close friends, but Katniss can read Peetas disinterest in anything more with Delly clear across the square of their neighborhood.
She misses Peeta at times. Though Katniss knows she shouldn't. There is an increasing distance between them, but Katniss knows it's not enough to say she should miss him. They share meals still and talk when they find one another. Occasionally, they take walks together to town. But when Gale announces that he will be staying in D12 with her, and Peeta tells her that he is happy for her, it feels like she is losing something.
She lets it go, accepts it, and holds on to happiness as much as she can. Starting the next morning when for the first time, Gale kisses her and promises not to leave.
