Mk, so...I watched all of Tribe Twelve yesterday. I'm making a page about my thoughts on the three Slenderman series I've watched thus far: Marble Hornets, EverymanHybrid, and Tribe Twelve. These are just my opinion, I'm not putting down a series in mean spirit, I still like them in their own special way. Warning! Spoilers ahead!:
Marble Hornets:
The first Slenderman series will hold a place in my heart as still being the most suspensefull of the three. It's still scary, 80+ entries later when Slender shows up. However, I'm worried that the series is dragging out the final confrontation, and I'm getting antsy. The series excelled at building suspense and world-building, though the the myriad of videos that's nothing but woods or old buildings can get old after a while.
The biggest problem I have with this series is the characters. Jay is boring as a protagonist. Being the objective reporter when it was Alex's tapes in the beginning makes sense, but when he videotapes Slenderman in person and never reacts, it kills the suspense. He runs, but he never really talks, so it's hard for me to care about his well being because I'm not really sure who he is. Tim is my favorite character on the series. He actually reacts like a normal human on the show. The first time he cracked a joke on-screen I though the camera was going to explode. Tim is easily the most interesting person in the series. (What's also interesting is when you realize Jay, Alex, and Tim have another channel on youtube that is nothing but weird humor, and they are good actors on that. It's like when they started MH they were like "No humor guys! EVER!" and it sorta limited the realistic interactions they can have with each other).
EverymanHybrid:
This series immediately is a step up on Marble Hornets because Jeff, Vinnie, and Evan act like normal guys on camera. I loved the initial twist of the Easter egg Slenderman in the first few episodes, and how the show really gets started when the real Slenderman shows up. I also love the inclusion of another Creepypasta monster, the Rake, later on in the series. The effects are superb, especially the teleportation sequences. I also love this series because the guys tried to 1) run Slenderman over with a car and 2) Evan tried to beat him to death with a baseball bat. Anyone who tries to take on Slenderman twice, willingly, wins my approval.
The biggest problem I have with this series is how spread out the story is over multitude of media. I came to EMH on youtube, but later on in the series I was starting to get annoyed because, unless I was on twitter, or on another bunch of websites I was actually missing out half the story, and they didn't so the best job making an update video clearly explaining everything that was going on. Guys, I like your series, but I'm not chasing down story plots on half a dozen different websites.
Lastly, my biggest problem with this series is also one of my favorite parts. Evan, and HABIT. Evan, you are an amazing actor, and the fact that you can switch between two completely different characters at the drop of a hat is very impressive. I am uncomfortable with HABIT, which might be the point. I liked EMH, but when HABIT showed up and killed Jeff and Evan's girlfriend and baby, I was seriously turned off the series. I felt like the twist came out of nowhere (again, probably because there were no good update videos explaining HABIT's actions until that point). However, I'm also uncomfortable with HABIT because he is the best acted and most interesting character on the show. Habit always makes me laugh, and he is always fun the watch. I suppose its the same thing that makes the Joker everyone's favorite character in Batman. Despite the terrible things he does, he is the most interesting and entertaining person (both Joker and HABIT).
Tribe Twelve:
This is probably my favorite of the three series so far. Considering I watched the entire series in one afternoon, I got hooked. The first several episodes were slow and almost turned me away, but I'm glad I kept watching. The effects in this show are really great, although I feel the Slenderman in MH is slightly more terrifying. The fact that this Slenderman actually uses his tentacles is a new thing for me, but I liked it. Noah, once he hit his stride, is a great protagonist. He is everything Jay is not. He reacts to everything that happens in a pretty realistic way (sometimes overreacts but hey, that's more fun to watch) and expresses a range of emotion over the series.
The story plot for Tribe Twelve is confusing at times, but mostly easy to follow. Like EMH there's riddles and puzzles to solve and clues to find, but TT seems to have streamlined the process a bit and moves the story along very quickly. I'm still not exactly sure what's going on in EMH at the moment, and MH doesn't have much of a plot, just "I have to find insert name!" TT's plot is pretty easy to follow, which is nice. Also, the crossover episodes with EMH are easy to follow, and I liked the connections they decided to create by combining the origin stories.
My biggest problem with this series is the fact that, while Noah acts pretty normal, anyone else who comes onscreen (barring the EMH guys) is clearly just reading a script. Milo, Mary, Noah's parents, they all try but it kinda kills the intrigue when you can clearly tell they have lines they are just reciting. I'm not asking for much, just a little feeling, a little inflection, that's all.
All 3: The Proxies:
Tribe Twelve has the best collection of proxies, simply because we know who several of them are, and they are their own people (go Firebrand!). These proxies make sense in the plot of the series as a whole, so they feel like they belong in the universe. The Observer videos are visually interesting to watch, and the fact that he doesn't even hide his threats makes the videos slightly more disturbing. These videos makes very clear the wants and desires of the the Collective, so Noah doesn't have to search the internet for weeks figuring out obscure codes. Again, this moves the plot along, (but I really wish Noah looked at his channel more for these videos before doing stupid things).
Marble Hornets had Masky and Hoodie, but it's now down to Hoody and Alex to try and finish the fight. Hoodie is not as interesting as the Observer. Yes, s/he breaks into peoples houses and watches them, records them, takes medicine, but not much else. The totheark videos are also so convoluted and riddled with codes that, without the help of the internet Jay would have never figured out the codes in the first season. This stymies the flow of the plot in my opinion. Also, they are not as fun to watch as the Observer's. The Observer videos don't feel like artfully done videos, more like recordings from another dimension, so they feel more organic.
EHM has the Rake, which is interesting considering its another monster, and HABIT. HABIT is highly fun to watch no matter where he shows up, so he's the best singular proxy so far. He's devious, devilish, entertaining, and I'm always unsure if he's going to laugh at you or cut you open.
So, Tribe Twelve does best in the realistic protagonist, proxy videos, and understandabe plot. EMH has a decent set of actors, and HABIT, who takes the cake. Marble Hornets has the most realistic Slenderman and will hopefully be wrapping up soon.
So...I have learned that if Slenderman is following me, I will NOT record it. I will not go looking for answers. I will not incur the wrath of Slenderman proxies.
Speaking of proxies, is Slenderman lazy? So far in Tribe Twelve, Marble Hornets and EverymanHybrid, all the work seems to be done by proxies. I mean, Slenderman just seems to like to watch people sleep. That's not that scary....
