META ----- HTTYD / HICCUP MEETS TOOTHLESS
I’m sitting here thinking about this scene in the first movie ... and in viking culture (specific to httyd) , the slaying of a dragon was a sign of victory and was celebrated within the tribe . they also had rankings , and the more dangerous the dragon , the grander the reward upon slaying it . they had to bring back a token to prove that it was slain , often times the severed head of the dragon , and the victor would be celebrated with a huge feast and even gain an honorary title from the chief . that is why stoick is so notoriously feared ; he has slain hundreds of dragons , and even has a collection of dragon skulls from every single slaying he has successfully completed. i believe he had even killed a night fury , and the berkians worshiped their chieftain for being a pillar of strength and valor.
so imagine , the son of stoick the vast , the son of the man known to have slain all of these dragons ... has shot down a night fury. hiccup , the boy everyone overlooked , cast aside and called him weak and a disgrace to the tribe , could have successfully captured and killed a night fury if he wanted . hiccup literally had the opportunity to clear his name , become a hero among his people , and gain the likes of not only the other viking children his age , but the respect of his elders . the night fury was literally trapped and even resigned to its fate when hiccup approached with his knife drawn . hiccup literally had his entire fate in the palm of his hands .
and the fact hiccup flat out refuses to kill him , in fact he cuts him free , was a huge betrayal to the berkians and especially the chief - his father . hiccup was willing to take the risk to be formally exiled from berk , bring shame to the haddock clan and lineage , all because he couldn’t kill a dragon . he didn’t want to . he was the first viking to see these beings for much more than war machines , and refused to exploit them and skin their carcass and put their severed skull onto a pole to showcase victory . that wasn’t anything to celebrate in his eyes . and this mindset literally would have cost him his entire , comfortable life on berk for the unknown of befriending a dragon .
it truly goes to show that hiccup , no matter how often he is plagued by loneliness , and yearns for the approval from his father and his viking peers , he has a strong moral compass and will not relent when it comes to standing up for and doing what he thinks is right . these dragons did not deserve to be killed in cold blood ; he understood them and wanted to bring peace , no matter the cost of his own life . that right there , is the true definition of altruism .
