The weeks had been long. Mary had watched the young man from afar, not wanting to interfere in his dilemmas unless he wanted the help. But with each passing day, she saw that he was struggling too much to even reach out. He had left town for days without warning, taking erratic trips with different people and doing who knows what with them. 

She could take it no longer. She needed to see him, to make sure he was being smart. She made her way to his house, noticing the disarray of the lawn and haphazard ways the window curtains were half drawn. She knocked boldly, calling out, “Flynn? I know you’re home. Come answer this door,” and took a step back to wait for his inevitable reply.
