more often than not, our mamas taught us exactly what we needed to know. whether it was through their actions or their words, they told us how it really is. the tips and tricks of life, and the ways of survival. and if there was a time they forgot to teach us, then that itself was a lesson for us to understand what it means to be an imperfect human who is doing the best she can. sometimes we took note, and sometimes we didn’t pay attention because we were so busy dreaming of another life — one that was different than theirs. we thought their experiences were exclusive to them, and that ours couldn’t possibly be the same. what we didn’t realize however, was that so much of what they endured and who they became, was not entirely derived from what they went through (and grew through) in life, but rather because of the fact that they are women. this mutual factor, who we are at the core of our being, results in a similar struggle, a shared experience, and a life that ends up mirroring theirs in far more ways than we would’ve imagined. so as we go through these challenges in our lives, we gain and lose, we learn and we grow, and it all shapes us in to who we were meant to be. it shapes us in to the women we are supposed to become, and the mothers we will be for when our children are old enough to take in all that we have to offer them. a mixture of what we learned in life, and what we learned from our mamas.
