          it had been a welcomed surprise when one of emmeline’s neighbours had invited her to get coffee. people kept her at a distance and she understood why. it would have been wise for her to keep her defenses up but the woman was so desperate to make positive connections now she was without allies or protection. she would have gone back to nathaniel if she could, he was still tightening his grip on her life outside of the essex corporation yet would never take a traitor back. resigning from her role, she had also resigned her title of ‘daughter’. her hands wrapped around her warm beverage, emmeline smiled once her company showed up. “hi. i would have ordered you something but was unsure of your beverage of choice. my apologies.”

Lake Orchid has been… uneventful. Their move has gone off without a hitch, leaving the dreaded Utah behind for this small, sleepy town. A week in, and nothing has happened. Evie knows she should enjoy that, but something awful stirs within her.

She watches what her brother is doing from the hallway alcove, where she leans against the corner hard enough to leave a mark in her arm. “Jace?” It’s been a year, and she isn’t worried nor is she regretful, but she’s curious. “Do you like it here?”
