Worse, if the Deltas fail at that mission they are executed. (The advisor says they will be reconditioned), in the books you learn that it means they execute them for failure :(

wut, Mara is absolutely a fangirl fave, she was introduced back when Leia and Mon Mothma were the only notable women in Star Wars and lots of female readers latched on to her. Club Jade - the mother of all SW fangirl sites - is named for her.

No one wants to see Thrawn humiliated and outsmarted, and even Filoni said that Thrawn cannot be outsmarted by anyone. All the fans would be upset if they did make him lose like this.

Where did Filoni say that?

Besides, Thrawn not being outsmarted = Thrawn killing the whole Phoenix Squadron.

However, we already have incontrovertible proof that the Ghost, Hera, and Chopper, all three survived up to Rogue One.

So, evidences already point out that Thrawn indeed got outsmarted.

Unless you have a better explanation that fits the already available evidences, I’d say my hypothesis stands.

Also... “All” the fans?

Please do not over-generalize. I know *I* won’t be upset. And I know quite a number of fans who won’t be upset, either.

I didn’t get exactly that vibe from what he said, tbh, just that his people were a main priority if not the main priority. And frankly that could have been the case in the Thrawn trilogy too. We know now he was building up both the main Empire and the Empire of the Hand as a defense of the entire galaxy against the Vong. I disliked that revelation mostly because the entire thing smacked of an awkward retcon.

More details about my nitpicks with the book under the cut.

Truthfully I think much of the book seems like Disney told Timothy Zahn “make him less capable and less sympathetic”. I’ve complained before about that “Thrawn’s bad at politics” business when it’s literally the same skills he uses with absolute brilliance in military maneuvering. I could see him needing some time to adjust to Imperial politics, but his being like an awkward duckling politically all the way up to Admiral? No, I don’t buy it.

I mean, let’s examine what this book changed:

Suddenly he’s bad at politics when that was absolutely the opposite in EU books. (Hence the quote my fic title came from: "If Palpatine was one step ahead of the courtiers, Thrawn was two steps ahead")

Since bleedin’ when does Thrawn need a translator all the way up to when he’s an Admiral? The first year or two okay, but not his whole career! I’ll be honest, my main thought about Eli is that if this was fanfic Eli would be roundly trashed as an obvious author-insert, with a “flaw” conveniently made up in Thrawn to create a need for Eli in the fic. Pellaeon was much much better in the “Watson” role than Eli. And not so whiny. 

The conversation about the Wookiee slaves I could somewhat see because Thrawn can be ruthless, but somehow that conversation felt a little forced, like it was put there to shock the readers at Thrawn’s callousness. I’m sorry, did Disney think we didn’t notice Thrawn’s ruthlessness in the original Thrawn trilogy?

Annnnd then that line about his exile being a trick. I’m sorry, what? Aside from the unsavory retcon feel of it, it also seemed like a calculated effort to remove one of the biggest things that makes fans all feelsy for Thrawn. How much have many of us talked about how we hurt for him when thinking of him being alone on that world for who-knows-how-long, and then suddenly this novel is all “lol nope that didn’t happen”? Um, no. (Plus that “he wasn’t really exiled” removes what I believe one of the main reasons he became so ruthless later on, so blah goes that character development.)

And I didn’t love the changes to Pryce either. Mind you, the political maneuvering was wonderful, I could have read a whole novel about her playing those vicious Moffs against each other. But the entire Batonn thing - not making her responsible for it but the way it happened - just really put me off. It made her look not only soulless but also kind of ridiculous for not figuring out a better way.

So that was my main gripe, is that the whole book feels like it’s trying to change Thrawn in ways that Zahn didn’t necessarily even want to but was sort of pushed into. Yes the EU as a whole was disjointed and convoluted, but Thrawn’s character development from Outbound Flight all the way to The Last Command was well-done and believable. It didn’t need to be awkwardly tampered with.

@evolvana, you make a good point, and really it doesn't have to have been Thrawn. The Death Troopers might have whapped him if he was resisting. The cut lip could have resulted from being backhanded, more so if the person hitting was wearing a metal gauntlet. And it wouldn't exactly be ooc for the troopers to have backhanded an uncooperative prisoner.

I thought I'd throw out one last "music video" of my pal Billy Mickelson's work. This was the first song I really heard from him, the first time I saw him play live. I was supposed to go see a live Jazz show of some sort for a Jazz Appreciation class, and instead I saw Third Seven. And I'm glad I did.
