I find it interesting how people change.
There was a time, a few years ago, when I didnt care about the legalities of piracy or the morals of it. I justified it to myself as “stuffs too expensive, im poor, they just want money and dont care about the artist, i’ll never be caught” and whilst mostly true ... something, somewhere down the line changed.
I have never been against owning the actual product of something. My main problem is, I dont see why I should have to wait to watch something that I like.
And so in cases like these, for instance Family Guy, I would download them as soon as they were uploaded online. And then when the DVD came out, I would buy that. Because, downloads are downloads. They dont come with all of the extra features and commentaries and BTS stuff that I’m interested in.
It is things like this, region blocking/locking, region codes ... They are pointless. They create issues where there needn’t be any. It means for the most part, I have to purchase Region Free blu-rays because the things I want in the UK are limited. But in the US ... No, its region 1. Fat lot of fucking good that is to me.
It’s more useful as a coaster. I’m willing to pirate for that reason alone.
Case in point, I have the DVD of High Fidelity. A great film, and one of my all time favorites. Blu-ray? REGION 1 US IMPORT. Fuck you. I’m not against DVD’s, it is the only way to get some stuff that WON’T be on Blu-ray, Stargate SG-1 is one example. Since it was filmed mostly in Standard Definition, it would require new special effects work, at least for earlier seasons. Stargate Atlantis is on Blu-ray region 2 but for 5 seasons its almost (if not more) expensive than the entire box set plus the two films of SG-1. I WILL be getting the SG-1 box set at some point, but therin lies the painful part of it.
This stuff isn’t cheap, especially when you have virutally no money. I have to work out carefully from week to week what I can afford to get. It’s a shame, just for some personal enjoyment and when you’re on the other side of the moral fence as it were, you can understand why pirating seems like an attractive way of obtaining stuff, instead of just saying “fuck the system”
These days, actually doing it makes me uncomfortable. I have no right to judge people who do, or call them on it and say “hey, thats wrong” ... I was just like that. But I will avoid it, if I can. Up until regional bullshit gets in my way.
