I had been hunting for a high-quality small frame 19-20 inches Lotus bike to rebuild for my daughter, after doing the same with a 23 inch Excelle and Classique for my older sons.  I ran across a 19 in. Excelle (1987) on eBay that looked great, but the seller didn’t know enough about bikes to answer my questions.  But for $79.99 I just paid and started planning how to get it “local pick-up only” in Indianapolis.  The seller didn’t want to wait two months till I got to Indy myself, so I arranged for a friend to pick it up.  Then the seller tells me he’s got a second Lotus bike but doesn’t know anything about it and it’s behind stuff in his garage so he can’t send me pix.  So I ask my friend to see if he can get some pix of it when he picks up the Excelle, which he does.  I see the pix and it is unmistakably a 1984 Unique, 20-incher.  I can’t pass it up and eventually make a deal with the guy to also buy it for $79.99.  Not wanting to send my friend back to the opposite end of the county, I picked it up myself a month and a half later after picking up the first one from my friend.  Back home in Michigan I start work on them and discover the Excelle has the original tires and seems to have almost never been ridden.  Lots of dust and grime but no rust at all.  The Unique is also in great shape except the “UNIQUE” decals and a few other odd ones are completely missing.  On top of that, the original wheels are missing and in their place I get a set of old 5-speed wheels with Campy hubs and Mavic rims.  I trade some old parts to my LBS in return for rebuilding the rear wheel with a proper size axle.  Long-story short, my daughter picks the Unique for the violet-blue color, but it also fits her perfectly.  And I rebuild the Excelle for her even more petite friend.
