[Marvel / Exceptional X-Men (2024) Issue #9]

One aspect of Issue #9 of Exceptional I just really want to focus on Emma all throughout this issue because wow, I am just simply delighted with everything that unraveled with her on these pages.

Throughout this issue, you essentially get to see the a side of Emma that we essentially haven't had the opportunity to see a whole lot. We've seen her as a teacher many times, but I don't think we've gotten to see her being truly caring and supportive in that role - which is such an immense shame because I feel like she really, really begins to shine when she's allowed to do this!

One of my mutuals has already touched on the abundance of physical touch throughout Exceptional in this lovely post, so I don't feel like I need to elaborate on that, but I was so immensely delighted to see Emma using this a lot to calm Alejandro down throughout this entire situation. I love how kindly she approaches the situation, and I especially love how calmly she approaches it too. Throughout the climax of this issue, Emma certainly becomes almost like an anchor for everyone in that issue, including Kitty (which I'll touch on in a separate post...)

I think, if anything, Ewing really just... humanizes Emma all throughout this issue and, well, all of Exceptional. I just really love the almost... gentle hand she approaches Emma with? Like it is all still so distinctly Emma with the glamour, the sharp remarks, the stronghead-ness. No one can doubt that it's Emma. But I also think Emma also gets to unravel here more than she has gotten to in the other series I've read her in. We get to see aspects of Emma's character that have always been there, but just haven't had the chance to be explored or just have... Been ignored.

(Which is a shame, really? For as much as this woman wants to be and is an educator, this is never explored all that much? I think her motivations are interesting, but they're never quite expanded upon? And the origins for the reason why she wanted to be a teacher, which was explored in the Emma Frost 2004 solo run, in the first place desperately need to be modernized, which is something sort of I mused on in this post.)

And as always, I just love love love when Emma uses this line. I love seeing it pop up with her time and time again. To me, I think it really cements her true motivations for why she does all that she does. A line like this is important too, I feel, especially when I think people often forget about this aspect of her character and focus on others that are, you know, probably more "fun."

(And of course, as someone who wants to be an educator, albeit an environmental one, I just eat this stuff up. It's no surprise that this is one of my favorite aspects of Emma's character, but hopefully I'm not the only one...?)

Anyway, I just had to make a seperate post for this. I'll be making one on the EmmaKate moments later because those moments were nothing short of insane and I have many thoughts (albeit probably less serious ones than these!)

Be honest: which of these new mutants do you think will end up having relevancy in 5-10 years?

If any. This isn't shade to the characters themselves, but Marvel has had a poor habit of introducing new mutants and then throwing them to the background--heck, Somnus' first team was the Marauders, and as soon as that series was done, he's never been mentioned again. I'm curious as to whether or not these characters will have the same treatment when "Exceptional X-Men" and "Uncanny X-Men" end.

Kate and Emma are still dealing with their trauma from Krakoa, Emma understands that, but Kate doesn't. She thinks because she's ignoring it she's fine. But obviously she's not.
