Been a while since I posted because dissertation data analysis has taken over my life! So here's a quick one - hip flexor stretches - super simple, very useful but often done badly! Here are some simple progressions and top tips (last progression definitely not for everyone, or acute patients, but good for sports people). 1. When you lunge forward keep your pelvis neutral rather than letting it tilt forwards, loosing the stretch in the right place (keep your abdminals slightly engaged). 2. To enhance the stretch, add spinal side bending or rotation from above, rather than keep adding hip extension from below until it just goes into the low back. 3. Hold stretches for 10-15 seconds and repeat a few times rather than holding for extended periods of time. 4. Stretches shouldn't be painful! 5. Disclaimer - tight hip flexors might be part of the clinical picture, but probably don't cause low back pain - but a few extra degrees of hip extension never hurt anybody!! #flexibility #hipflexors #psoas #hipextension #osteopathy #physicaltherapy #manualtherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #prehab #prehabilitation #exerciseasmedicine #stretch #gettingflexy #sportsperformance #conditioning #strengthandconditioning
