Powered by an OHV 3.2 litre engine, the 20/60 was capable of over 70 mph when fitted with touring coachwork and the motoring journalists of the time were highly impressed by the refinement and advanced specification, which included powerful four wheel brakes. From 1926 the model became the Sunbeam 20 of 2916 and latterly 3317cc seven main bearing six cylinder engines, and a choice of 124.5 and 131 inch wheelbases. In 1930 the 3317cc engine was introduced as the Sunbeam 23.8 while the 2916cc engine remained in production until 1935 in the Speed 20. In addition to the larger engine the 23.8 received vacuum servo brakes and a silent third gearbox. The Sunbeam Dawn was the last of the old Wolverhampton-based Sunbeam, did not survive the Great Depression. It fell into receivership in 1934 and was sold by the receiver to the Rootes brothers. The Dawn was a last ditch attempt to open up a Sunbeam to a wider market, by moving from what were perceived to be exclusive prestigious expensive cars. But there was no skimping on the workmanship, and the Dawn was technologically advanced with wet liners, an aluminium cylinder head block and independent front suspension by upper wishbones and a transverse spring. Originally offered with a Wilson pre-selector gearbox it reverted to a conventional four speed transmission on the later models. The car was however weighty at 26cwt, which affected performance and expensive at £ 485. The Dawn was sold as a 4-light or 6-light Saloon Having bought both Sunbeam and Talbot Rootes combined there names as Sunbeam-Talbot to offer what were basically upmarket versions of their Hillman and Humber stablemates. The marque name continued until 1955, when cars were again known as Sunbeam, but were a far cry from the pre-war built Wolverhampton cars. Founded in 1875 as the Paris branch of the American Hotchkiss munitions manufacturer, Hotchkiss of St. Denis built its first car in December 1903. Though its chief executive and managing executive were Americans and its works manager was the Englishman Henry Ainsworth, the Hotchkiss was the epitome of the French luxury touring car during the period between the wars. The firm’s mainstay in the twenties was the four-cylinder 50hp 2.4-litre AM, which was redesignated as the AM2 in 1926 when overhead valves were added. The AM2 was a car that justified its slogan ‘Le Juste Milieu’ (‘The Golden Mean’) – it’s price placed it exactly between the inexpensive Citroen and the luxurious Hispano-Suiza. AM2 reliability was legendary: the car could cruise at a steady 60mph as long as the road allowed, with a top speed of 70mph. It had a four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel drum brakes and semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear. It’s worthy qualities were so plentiful that the AM2’s devoted clientele could forgive its rather straight-laced styling and uninspired handling. The AM2 was supplanted by the new AM80 six-cylinder in 1932, but the durable French favourite soldiered on under the type 412 designation until 1934.
