I think it's really the drumming that makes this stand out. Put in some more standard 60s' pop / rock drums in there and this would still be unusual, but not so much so. It's the drums, in this era, I think - nobody was going completely out there with the drum parts at that point. The fact that it happened in this band likely traces directly back to Beefheart's brain.
