A small handful are lifetimes. A toothbrush with toothpaste/powder is always the best way to clean teeth. But is it OK to use toothpaste that's been sitting around for a long time and past its expiration date? Toothpaste does have a shelf life. The ADA requires any toothpaste containing fluoride to carry an expiration date two years after the manufacture date. The fluoride becomes less effective as it does not bind well to tooth enamel, thus it loses its ability to brush away bacteria in the mouth and protect against cavities. Ingredients start to separate, including the flavoring, so it becomes quite unpleasant to your taste buds. Toothpaste may just become too dried out and hard to squeeze through the tube. Additionally, for toothpaste that has been uncapped long-term, improperly handled or in contact with a used toothbrush, toothpaste (even unexpired) can start growing bacteria or fungi. Brushing your teeth with bacteria-laden toothpaste is something you definitely want to avoid. One, of many, solutions to this is to make your own toothpaste or purchase toothpaste that does not contain [potentially harmful] fluoride. But don't throw it away; surprisingly, there are lots of uses for toothpaste outside of the mouth such as:
Freshens Kitchen Drain
Freshens Food Containers (wash with dish soap after use)
Works as a Car Freshener
Removes Small Scratches from Phone Screens
Repairs Minor Car Scratches
Cleans the bathroom sink
Removes marks from kitchen cabinets
Cleans a clothes iron
Removes scuffs from leather shoes Expired Toothpaste Should NOT be Used for These Conditions:
Stops Itching from Bug-Bite & Skin Rashes
Stops the Burn
Stops Poison Ivy in its Tracks
Reduces Bruising
Removes odor from hands
Acne treatment

Shelf Life of Foods and Drugs May Not be Absolute
During normal times, it's difficult to argue taking the risk of making yourself sick if the upside will only amount to a couple of dollars saved. But what about when times are not normal? Would you be so quick to toss your "expired" can of green beans if calories were as scarce as water in a desert? Canned foods can last up to 30+ years if stored properly. Canned meat 4-30 years Canned vegetables 3-8 years Canned beans 3-6 years Canned fish 3-6 years Canned rice 2-6 years Canned broth 3-5 years Canned soups 2-4 years Canned fruits last around 1-2 years However, their shelf life can be stretched even further if you store them correctly.
