Today is the first day I've ventured to try a Burnaby restaurant during the Bite of Burnaby @biteofburnaby which runs till March 31, 2021. I went to @peakedpies on Hastings St and Gilmore. For $15 you get a choice of an Aussie pie, which is topped by a scoop of mashed potatoes, then a scoop of mushy peas, and finally some gravy. You also get a mini Lamington cake and a can of soda. I ordered the Chunky Steak with Mushroom pie. The mashed potato and mushy peas take up quite a bit of each slice I took from the pie, and diluted the pie's flavour. I did try a piece of the pie on it's own and the flavour was subtle. Not spicy or salty. I think a bit of spice, either black pepper or from Worcestershire sauce, would have been nice. The peas provided texture as they were not 100% mushy. There were about 50% whole peas and 50% mashed peas, which I appreciated. My favourite item though was the Lamington Cake! According to Wikipedia, "A lamington is an Australian cake made from squares of butter cake or sponge cake coated in an outer layer of chocolate sauce and rolled in desiccated coconut." And according to me, it is delicious. The cake is soft and the chocolate sauce just absorbs a few mm into the cake, and you get a light coconut flavour and some texture. So come to Burnaby if you live across the Boundary divide in Vancouver and taste what some Burnaby restaurants have to offer.
