Cai Guo-Qiang frequently works with volatile substances, creating “explosion images” by covering paper with gun powder and setting off a controlled blast in order to create a pattern on the sheet. Here he has replicated this technique with an equally unlikely material—printed reproductions of postage stamps depicting peonies, a traditional floral symbol of China. On view in "Unexpected Surfaces" through August 5.
