A first-time listen courtesy of Dark Entries records that absolutely blew my mind. I always wrote off R.L. Crutchfield’s stuff in favour of his more well-known DNA counterparts (Mori, Lindsay) but this album is the perfect kind of cold for this Thursday morning.

The Exterminating Angel [El ángel exterminador] (1962)

We are trapped in our respective social norms.  For the bourgeoisie of Exterminating Angel especially, they need to maintain a facade of decency to survive from day to day.  More importantly, they need working-class people to prop them up, take care of their daily needs: cooks, butlers, maids.  If those people are removed from the equation, the facade collapses.  After the ladies and gentlemen of Nóbile’s dinner party find themselves unable to leave his salon, any scrap of normalcy is quickly cast aside: rituals are performed, walls are destroyed, lambs slaughtered.  They are in a cage (a quarantine?) of their own making.  Perhaps this is an allegory for Franco’s Spain, but it has just as much staying power with the American oligarchs of 2020.
