I'm not kidding about growing into having Extreme Empathy.

I just read a post about hyper-empathy, and rather than hijack that post, I'm putting my thoughts on the subject in their own post.
I've always been highly empathic, extremely sensitive to the feelings of those around me, or getting the "vibe" of a place.
For example, I'll never go to Maine again, because from the moment we crossed the border from New Hampshire, I was overwhelmed by a powerful feeling of "I shouldn't be here," and it didn't go away until we left the state.
For a people-related example, when people around me fight, whether I know them or not, I have to get as far away from it as possible, or if it isn't possible, find some distraction to focus on as a mental shield.
I find other people's intense emotions distressing, to put it mildly. It has progressed over the course of my life from what may have been a natural talent when I was little, to a survival skill honed growing up in an increasingly dysfunctional and trauma-inducing household, to become a feature of the PTSD that resulted from that experience.
I'm getting better at controlling my reactions to upsetting external stimuli, but some days are better than others.
Now, for fun, consider this: my late wife was as empathic as me, in similar ways, and for similar reasons. Now picture the two of us going through PMS, and then menopause, together. Fun times!
Fortunately, by the time we found each other we had both learned to try not to inflict our bad moods on each other. So it was not uncommon for one of us to say to the other "I have a case of the bitchies for reasons that I can't pin down right now, so I'm going to go sit in my corner and be quiet for awhile." I'm still amazed at the degree to which we were able to give each other space in apartments that had very little physical space.
I seem to be wandering away from the original topic, so I'll stop for now.
Empathy really is a nasty paradox --
Feel so much you identify with the victim
But such emotional distress you can do nothing to help them.
How to be more innovative
How to be more innovative

How about taking a new year resolution today to be more innovative? A resolution almost midway through the year? That would be… different…
Yes, I know it is not the new year and we are inching towards the half way mark. More importantly, would you like to be more innovative? Most people would say yes to that. Most jobs require you to…

The problem with being an empath
Is that you feel too much. If someone is upset you'll stop at nothing to make them happy again. If someone is angry you calm them down. If someone is afraid you remind them everything is okay. Because if you don't do these things you'll feel it. The sorrow, the anger or the fear. Sometimes you'll be the happiest person alive and someone will pass you by and you'll begin crying and you just don't know why. You want to know why but you can't ask because they're a stranger and you don't want to get yelled at. If you feel too much you'll try to help and sometimes your trying to help makes it worse. And it hurts more. You literally have no control of how you feel. People avoid you because you're "too emotional" it just.....it fuckin suck man....
You're a terrible friend. You only care about your own pain. I'm sorry you hurt so bad, but that doesn't mean other people aren't vulnerable or sensitive. And just because you made a career out of it doesn't mean that other people don't have feelings. You don't get to f*cking cry right now. I am crying right now.
Gina, Welcome to Me (2014)
if u want to know me just watch hannibal, will graham is me
Boss is like "Hey, I'm working on some supervisory training for this company etc etc watch this video where you get to see what these people are thinking while they're at the hospital to illustrate a point." So I watched the video and, like, I kept getting attacked by emotions
because I guess the point of the video was to try and get people to sympathize/empathize with everyone and like show how if you knew what they felt, you might treat them differently. Problem is I already do that really really well. I'm empathic to a point that it causes me problems sometimes, so I watched it and had to just like clench my fists and take deep breaths at times because EMOTIONS. ughhhhh.
