Metal Valkyrie Reviews Extremist, A Popular Christian Hard Rock Album
Demon Hunter released their new album “Extremist” on March 18th, 2014, immediately getting extensive radio play throughout the US. The Seattle proclaimed Christian Rock band has been around since 2000, but haven’t earned attention the Extremist has brought before. There was the controversy about the military using their music for torture methods overseas and the band supporting the military, sending patches and albums overseas. The band declined the allegations that they volunteered their music to the military, even after a Navy Seal reported wearing the Demon Hunter patch throughout his tour of duty. Nonetheless, Demon Hunter is one of the most popular hard rock bands in the US right now.
“Extremist” has brought Demon Hunter to the limelight with continuous hit tracks like “The Last One Alive” and “One Last Song”. The album is full of heavy, down tuned, songs about faith that maybe written for American rock fans’ distinct tastes. Nearly every song is different from their earlier albums, having softer vocals less influenced by power metal and less speedy tracks. The band is no longer in the wheelhouse of Battlecross, but much more in the Five Finger Death Punch range of metal and hard rock with this album. The album does exhibit heavier sides like on “Cross to Bear” a heavy drudging track that boosts the album’s lack of energy; it being one of my favorite tracks. They do however go back to their Soilwork like roots with “In Time”, that is a brilliantly written power metal track showing signs of European influence that is sure to please all metal listeners. Overall, you can expect a fairly solid American Christian hard rock album with some death metal jewels placed throughout. It is a refreshing hard rock album that you will continue to hear on the radio and not hate it.
Extremist has already sold more than 18,000 copies, debuting 16th on the Billboard 200 Chart. This band has definitely made it into the realm of mainstream rock and metal, so will they hold their unique sounds, or fall to American consumerism? It’s hard to say with the growing American rock industry. But, I will say that Demon Hunter is a vastly talented band that can cover all types of rock and metal. They will be around for quite awhile based on the Extremist.
