Early Eyelash Bug

Here's my last bug in the series for Tier 3 patrons, based on eyelash bugs and wasps! These little critters have amazing antenna that look like eyelashes!

Find this bug on Tier 3 until April 1st. I'll be compiling this celestial bug series into a cute #xstitchzine, too, so please stay tuned!

This is an absolutely bizarre friend and a great find! I've never had one submitted before. Let's zoom for a better look

I must admit if I didn't already know these dudes existed, I'd be very confused! This is a wedge-shaped beetle in the family Ripiphoridae. Specifically a wasp nest beetle, Metoecus paradoxus. They’re also sometimes called eyelash bugs for obvious reasons. Their larvae are parasitoids of common European yellowjacket larvae. :)

@frillish-is-watching submitted: I'd like to share this extremely red beetle I found once on the road to campus! I assume he was on his way to beetle classes (UK if you want to ID)

Ooooh extremely red indeed! And so it makes sense that it’s called the common cardinal beetle :) They’re a type of fire-colored or eyelash beetle in the family Pyrochroidae.
