"Dan! I’m home!" Phil walked into the flat carrying grocery bags. He made his way up the nearly endless flights of stairs. A small smile made its way to his face as he neared the living room. Christmas music was playing faintly. He hummed along to "Feliz Navidad" and kept walking. When he made it to the kitchen, Dan was standing there scarfing down a bowl of cereal.
"What did you get?" He asked with his mouth full.
"Stuff for cookies and other holiday things." Phil set the grocery bags on the counter. Dan put his bowl down and searched the bags. He started pulling out ingredients for the cookies. He grabbed chocolate chips, Hershey’s kisses, M&Ms and Maltesers. He kissed the bag of Maltesers and then Phil’s face.
"Thank you so much. I needed these." Dan said.
"No problem. Did you decorate like I told you to?" Phil replied. Dan’s eyes widened and he walked out the kitchen. With no success, he hit the glass door. Phil let out a hyena-like laugh. As Dan walked away with his head down in shame, he smiled a little bit.
Phil had set everything out so they could start baking. He sighed in content and put his hands on his hips. He counted all the ingredients, making sure they were all where they needed to be. After that, he realized Dan hadn’t returned. It had been twenty minutes and Dan was no where to be found.
"Dan? What are you doing?" Phil walked up to their rooms. He knocked on Dan’s door and let himself in.
"Phil, I require assistance. These lights suck." Dan was sat on the floor surrounded by Christmas lights. He must’ve spent a long time working on it because he was literally tangled in them and ready to go on a rampage. Phil laughed and sat down across from him. They untangled the lights slowly. They kissed and laughed while getting the younger one out of the lights. Being his usual, curious self, Phil scooted over and plugged the lights in. Dan frowned immediately when he noticed what his childlike boyfriend was doing. He couldn’t stay mad at him. He just smiled a little bit and let Phil do whatever he was doing.
After all, they were dating. They were in love. Nothing made Dan happier than Phil did. Ever since they started talking online, he had been in love. From the Skype sessions to being able to cuddle in bed, he loved Phil. Of course Phil felt the same. He was the one who helped him through everything. He trusted him, cared for him, loved him. Phil was everything Dan wished for.
"Stop moving. You’re making this hard to do babe." Phil laughed as Dan squirmed around.
"This is really weird though." Dan pouted.
"Well if you shut up and stopped moving we would be done quicker." Phil untangled the lights from Dan’s arms.
"I’ll shut up if you kiss me." Dan smirked.
"You’re so lucky I love you." Phil giggled. He held Dan’s hands and pressed his soft lips to his. Dan sighed into the kiss and relaxed. He released his hands from the lights and pulled Phil’s shirt close. The kiss felt just like the first one they shared. This one was more magical, more special almost. It was much more passionate, needy, desperate. Their mouths molded together perfectly. Dan’s mind raced with thoughts of Phil. He wondered how he got so lucky. He was with the most beautiful man he had ever seen. There was nobody he would rather be with. Phil was perfect to him. Despite all his small flaws and quirks, Dan loved him anyway.
Phil pulled away slowly and looked Dan straight in his eyes.
"Can we come out soon?" Dan whispered.
"Yeah, I was just thinking that. Should we get it over with?" Phil replied. Dan bit his lip and nodded. Phil got up and held his hand out for Dan to take. Dan took it then pulled himself up. The lights fell off of him as he stood up. Phil giggled and dragged Dan to his room. They set up the camera and fixed the lighting. Dan strung Christmas lights on Phil’s dresser and bed. When he plugged it in, he noticed Phil began recording.
"What the- Phil stop!" Dan screeched. Phil laughed hard and stopped recording his boyfriend.
"This will be the best Christmas present for us and the fans." Phil smiled.
"It’s about time we do this. Three years Phil! We’ve waited three years!" Dan exclaimed. Phil patted the spot next to him and Dan sat down. He held his hand and nodded.
"It’s okay babe. We got this." Phil kisses his cheek. Dan blushed and hit the record button.
"Hey guys!" Phil started.
"Hello internet." Dan smiled.
"We have some exciting news for you. First I’ll explain everything. Around this time three years ago, Dan and I were sitting in our living room. I can’t remember how this happened but we kissed." Phil looked over at Dan.
"Three years ago today, I asked Phil to be my boyfriend." Dan smiled.
"I said yes. That was the best Christmas Eve ever. Both of us are really happy and have waited forever to be able to come out. It’s kind of scary but I’m surprised I’m so calm about it." Phil said.
"I’ve never been happier. I’m surprised I’m calm about this too." Dan squeezed Phil’s hand. They both smiled at each other and Dan kissed Phil’s cheek. Phil looked down and blushed.
They went on and talked about their normal lives, what they’ve been up to, their plans for the new year, and everything in between. They didn’t do a sap story about them finding out they were gay. They just said they knew it and went on with their lives. They discussed their plans for the next day, which was Christmas. Cuddles, movies, and baking. Phil thought of doing a Christmas baking video but they decided not to. They deserved a break. A break is what the got for the rest of the year.
They sat on the couch, snuggled into each other. The Polar Express was on TV. Dan pressed a small kiss to Phil’s head and held him close. Phil smiled and focused on the movie. He held a bowl of popcorn and Dan reached over to grab some.
"I love you." Phil looked up at Dan.
"I love you too." Dan smiled.
"I’m so excited for tomorrow. You’re going to love what I got you." He played with Dan’s long fingers.
"Well you’re going to love what I got you. It took forever to get."
"Mine is better."
"Doubt it."
"It is."
"We will find out in the morning then."
"Okay."
"Mine is better though babe."
"Whatever you say." Phil closed his eyes.
When the movie ended they decided to go to bed. They kissed for a while before going into their separate rooms. Dan pretended to be asleep so Phil would eventually go to sleep. He fell asleep but woke himself up. He got up around 6 in the morning to put his present under their Christmas tree. He doubted his present would be good enough but he spent a lot of time and money on it. He spent days debating whether they were responsible enough for what he had got them. He opened a small crate and pulled a black kitten out. He set it in a cage he had hid in a closet for weeks. Dan put the kitten in it along with a blanket he bought from the pet store. The kitten meowed and pawed at the cage. Dan put his finger to his lips and shushed the cat. It stopped meowing and it curled into the blanket. He saw that Phil had set out presents already. Dan sighed in relief and went back to bed for another two hours.
"Babe! Come on!" Phil poked Dan repeatedly. Dan groaned then sat up a bit. He stretched and got out of bed. Phil had the biggest smile on his face as he dragged Dan into the living room. He dropped Dan’s hand and covered his mouth.
"Merry Christmas baby." Dan smiled. Phil ran to the cage and opened it. The kitten slowly walked out and into Phil’s hands. He picked the tiny creature up and held it close.
"Thank you so much! She’s so adorable! You won best present." Phil pet the kitten’s small head. Dan laughed and sat on the couch. Phil sat next to him with their kitten in his arms. They kept opening presents throughout the morning. Phil’s best gift to Dan was a black jacket that he had been wanting for the longest time. They did as they planned, cuddled, baked cookies, and watched movies. It was the best Christmas they ever had.
