F-Zero X Nintendo EAD Nintendo 64 1998
Nintendo, it's time to make a new F-Zero or Wave Race game, or at least make the old ones playable somehow. They deserve more than just minor appearances in Smash. It says something that the easiest way for me to play them again was to download them from the internet and throw them in an emulator because it's less of a pain than wasting a couple hours going to my parents' house, figuring out which box they're buried in, and then figuring out how to hook that stuff up to a modern TV or monitor. Even though I still own physical copies of them it's easier to pirate them, and anyone who doesn't already have them pretty much doesn't have any other options.
Anyway, I spent a couple hours playing the most recent of each because I remembered they existed and I hadn't touched either in forever.
Wave Race: Blue Storm still looks and feels pretty good for a GameCube launch title, especially running at 1080p. It's kinda lacking in courses (only eight total) and stuff to keep you playing too long, but I still appreciate what they did with what's there. The water is still very satisfying in both a graphics and physics sense, and once I remembered how the steering and anticipating turns works it's pretty fun. I totally forget the timing for like 80% of the tricks and can't do them reliably anymore though. I still really appreciate how much the weather affects the courses and that you get to choose which ones to do on which days of a tournament based on the weather forecast .It makes so much of a bigger impact than in most games because water, so it's not just slightly harder to see or whatever, the actual courses change because of wave and water height.
F-Zero GX looks amazing in HD. I would be perfectly happy with a game coming out this year that looks like this and is as smooth (as long as they gave it a proper HD UI and cutscenes). It's so fast. I totally forget how the steering works and am so bad at it compared to before, and going right back to a high speed/low acceleration setup was a mistake. It can be both very punishing if you screw up and very rewarding when you get it right, and did I mention how incredibly fast and smooth it is? I also remember the story mode on the higher difficulties being one of the hardest things I've ever tried to do in a game, and I never quite managed to finish the whole thing. The normal courses aren't so bad once you get used to them though, and I also immediately got much better once I found the button to set the camera how I used to have it.
I guess I should probably check out Fast RMX one of these days because it's supposed to be the closest modern thing to F-Zero, and then hope some day Nintendo feels like doing something with either of those series again...
