Charles had developed a nightly routine over the past few weeks. Every evening, without fail, he would kneel beside your growing belly, resting his head lightly against it, and start talking.
“Bonsoir, mon petit,” he whispered, fingers tracing gentle circles over your skin. “It’s Papa again. You are getting big, you know? I think you will be fast, like me.”
You laughed, brushing a hand through his messy hair. “Charles, they’re not even born yet. How do you know they’ll be fast?”
He grinned, looking up at you. “Because they are my child, chérie. Speed is in their blood.”
Despite his confidence, Charles had been slightly frustrated for the past few days. No matter how much he spoke to the baby, no matter how many times he placed his hand on your belly, there had been no response. Not a single kick.
“I think they’re ignoring me,” he pouted.
“They’re probably just waiting for the right moment,” you teased. “Maybe they’re dramatic—like you.”
Charles gasped, placing a hand over his heart. “Dramatic? Moi?”
You raised an eyebrow. “Who sulks every time he doesn’t get pole position?”
“I do not sulk,” he argued. Then, after a pause, “…Okay, maybe a little.”
You giggled, running your fingers along his jaw. “Give them time. They’ll kick soon.”
But Charles was impatient. He wanted to feel that first kick, that first sign that his baby was listening.
Later that evening, you were curled up on the couch, Charles sitting beside you with one hand resting lazily on your bump. You were watching a recap of the latest F1 race, Charles muttering comments under his breath every time his onboards appeared on screen.
“They should have shown my overtake on Lap 22,” he grumbled.
You rolled your eyes. “Yes, love. Clearly a crime against humanity.”
Just as you were about to tease him more, the TV played a clip of his Ferrari roaring down the straight. The unmistakable growl of the engine filled the room.
And then—
You felt it.
A sudden, strong kick against your belly.
You gasped, sitting up slightly. “Charles—”
His eyes widened. “Did—was that—?”
Before you could respond, the baby kicked again. Right under Charles’ palm.
His jaw dropped. “Oh my god.”
You burst into laughter, realization hitting you. “Charles… they kicked for Ferrari.”
Charles blinked. “No. No, no, no.” He shook his head in disbelief. “I have been talking to them for weeks, and they ignore me—but they kick for the car?”
You couldn’t stop laughing. “They must like Ferrari more than you.”
Charles groaned, burying his face in his hands. “This is betrayal.”
You cupped his cheeks, pulling him up to face you. “Think of it this way, love. Our baby is already your biggest fan.”
He exhaled, still looking betrayed but also undeniably proud. “That’s true.”
Then, with a small smirk, he rested his head against your belly again. “Okay, mon bébé. Since you like Ferrari, I will make sure you get a very, very fast kart when you grow up.”
You flicked his forehead. “Charles, they haven’t even been born yet.”
He just grinned. “It’s never too early to start training a future champion.”
And with another small kick, it seemed the baby agreed.
