WHYDFL: Eunice ‘Sachiko’ Kang
I always laugh when I get the question of "Why Greek life? Why DPhiL?" Growing up, I was surrounded by boys. I only had one older brother who always had his guy friends over, so growing up, I wasn't too fond of the overly girly things. Even back in high school, I had all these stereotypes of what a sorority was like and I never imagined myself to be in one, let alone an asian interest one. And I laugh because it was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made in my whole life. Going to DePaul, I realized it was really hard to meet people who I could relate to. I just didn't feel like I could fit into a school in the city until my friend from high school (who's also my line sister AYYY @christine) convinced me to go to the first day of rush. With a bit of persuasion, she finally dragged me into the room where I met the active house. I swear, when I left the room, I was so set that this is what I wanted to join for the rest of my time at DePaul (and forever cause that everlasting sisterhood doe). I shyly sat down and got to know all the sisters one by one, meanwhile they opened my eyes to the ignorance I carried in my perception on sorority and greek life. It was that day that I decided to rush and join. I have never regretted that choice since that first day of rush.

I know that leaving a familiar place and starting somewhere new where you barely know anyone can be an intimidating experience. Transferring to Chicago all the way from my hometown, Tennessee, I was anxious that I would have a hard time making new friends. As shallow as might this sound, that is the sole reason why I joined Delta Phi Lambda. BUT for the two years that I have been an active sister of this organization I have gained so much more than friendship. Ever since I joined, I have been surrounded by amazing group of women who are not only my friends but who I can also proudly call my sisters. They have been there for me since day one, and I know they would continue to be so even after my last year at DePaul is over.
