The steam of the last cycle is largely exhausted. Innovators have either matured into more conservative companies, or been acquired by them.

You tell it the pattern you’re looking for, and then it disgorges something plausible synthesized from its vast set of training patterns." Yep. This. There's no "thinking" or "intelligence" here, just sophisticated pattern matching on a vast, vast sample size called "all the crap we put on the Internet".
