Because some promo/interviews referred to BB-8 as female, and people were excited to see a droid that wasn't considered male in the series.

Ahhhh!  That makes sense, since a lot of the posts / controversy do seem to date from before the movie actually hit theaters.  

I just asked because I was seeing a lot of snarky "droids can't have genders!" type stuff and was like... o.O I think I'll trust Rey to tell me what the droid can and can't do...?

But I can definitely understand people being psyched about a female droid and then disappointed when Rey and Finn start saying "he."

What does your current favorite character (of the ones you have written/are writing/mean to write) think about the clothing of your next-favorite from a different story/setting? And vice versa, if you feel like it. I want meta-opinions about fictional fashion.

This is just for you, because I’m terribly fond of you and you know all the imaginary people:

Severine thinks Nineteen Adze’s clothing -- all that layered white, white pants and white multi-lapelled blouse and white jacket and white sash/belt and white boots -- is the most aggressive clothing she’s ever seen in person on someone who isn’t trying to be flashy. (Her opinions on how it is really deeply soothing to look at that much layered uncolored fabric are not ones she’d say out loud, but it is so nice. She suspects that if Nineteen Adze knew about the sensory overload thing she’d take advantage, and thus she’s not mentioning it.)

Nineteen Adze thinks Severine should wear more clothes. Little brightly-colored dress scraps are very appealing, but doesn’t this girl work as what is essentially a glorified crime-scene cleanup crew? (On the other hand, no one is ever going to think she isn’t dangerous, showing up in handkerchief-skirted red and gold gauze and knee-high leather boots. Dangerous, and not practical. Clearly her partner, the one in all that utilitarian black, is the one doing all the work.)

I honestly don't remember. :-/ Life was pretty scary, it would have been hard to make it worse.
