What should replace the term “fagoting” in knitting?
Lace columning
Lace bundling
Thread bundling
Bundle truss
Thread truss
No replacement, keep the term
Some other term
I’m working through creating an online database of knit stitches and personally I’m not a fan of the term. While it refers to gathering the stitches vertically, the usage as a “bundle of sticks” is lost on a modern audience as-is.
hmmmmm I need to check my sewing machine's manual to see if I need a specific needle for this stitch, surely I will not get completely sidetracked by a funny word! :)
my sewing machine manual:
Threads, September 2020
The cover of Threads has a pretty silk dupioni blouse with a sheer embroidered yoke in a lovely autumnal cover which you are urged to wear during the daytime. I though of the catty Dress Doctor who said: women who wear party clothes to work clearly receive few party invitations. Meow. Becky Fulgoni would clearly protest, and advises you to hand wash crispy silks like dupioni in order to avoid dry cleaning them at the end of your workday. But crispy silks do soften after washing, and soften, and soften rather like crispy linens, so make you sure like the not-so-crispy look if you take this route.
This issue has a technical article by Carol Laflin Ahles on fagoting which used to be handwork but can be done by machine. It is heavy hread that connects two finished edges of fabric together leaving a gap in between. It works especially well as embellishment on cuffs and collars, although you see it here running down the length of a dress. Then, Nancy Nix-Rice takes on the wrapped dress and recommends altering patterns to widen the underlay (a technique I first saw decades ago on Donna Karan dresses), bind the neckline as you see here, even add a dickey. The Dress Doctors thought wrapped dresses did not work very well (all that unwrapping in the breeze) and indeed Nix Rice concludes that you could make a matching, non-wrapped skirt and be “more secure.” Yep.
The lovely pink dress and jacket combination with bow was designed by Adele Simpson in 1964, such a pretty example of how women’s suits survived into the 1960s but became simpler and less fitted in jacket shape. Judith Neukam explain how to make the bow belt. Hint: you make the bow by sewing it and never tie the bow again.
There are product reviews, pattern reviews, help columns, as well as more technical articles as you can see from the cover. You can find it at your local newsstand or fabric store, or online here: https://www.threadsmagazine.com/
