Like, I have two ideas for this:
Idea one is where fairies naturally existed many years ago, but died out of existence until the 20th century when recessive genes kicked in and people were slowly being born with traits of the classical mythological fairies.
They have rather large and strong, translucent wings that develop within the first few weeks of being born (they have really tiny things that are weak at birth). They can achieve flight with practice, and they are especially sensitive to weather conditions and air currents (thus leading to myths on their weather-bending mythological abilities). Fairies, otherwise known as Homo Sapien Vanessa subspecies, are also built differently where their muscles are more lean and their bones are much lighter.
However, on the downside, fairies are also more easily effected by weather. They get cold faster because of thin, sensitive skin and burn/dry out more easily in arid climates (they prefer humid weather the most). They often use a variety of skin protection creams and moisturizers and have to bundle up just when it gets even a little chilly. While some people find them fascinating, they’re also so low in numbers and misunderstood that people marginalize them (think mutants in the Marvel world).
Tadashi was born with wings in a little slice of suburbia. However, while his parents understood and accepted him, many of the townsfolk did not. For years, he was picked on for his wings, especially once his advanced intelligence came into play. He went to hide his wings and never use them.
However, when Hiro is born, the little baby quickly lands himself in trouble when he learns how to use his wings. Tadashi comes to like his wings a bit more the more Hiro idolizes them, and Tadahi comes to use them extensively to save Hiro when the baby somehow flies up to the roof every other day (Hiro’s a particularly crafty, mischievous baby).
When they’re parents die, however, the two winged children, traumatized enough, are moved to SF to live with their Aunt Cass. Hiro is quickly found to be a bigger genius than Tadashi, and, in order for the two to retain some sanity (because Tadashi was so picked on in school, and he doesn’t want the same for his brother), the two hide their wings.
Then Tadashi gets to high school, and, on the first day, he runs into a guy named Fred, a fellow winged who loves his wings. He wears them out proudly in their shimmery, multi-colored glory, and upon meeting Tadashi, who questions him on the wings, Fred is absolutely ecstatic about them because he can FLY! He can tell weather and, man, does it make him feel like a superhero. Just being around Fred over two years convinces Tadashi to love his wings as well, and he eventually shows them.
Hiro’s got it bad, though, because kids are cruel of others smarter than them and different. However, once he joins Tadashi in high school, Tadashi gets Hiro to meet Fred (because Hiro never met Tadashi’s friends because he was sure no one would want to hang out with the little, annoying brother). Hiro becomes great friends with Fred, and it’s got a greatly positive effect on Hiro. Even when Tadashi and Fred graduate, Hiro spends all spare time at SFIT because Fred’s the mascot and Tadashi goes to school there. Of course, all of the Nerd Herd are fairies, and they’ve all got their tips and tricks to deal with issues that come with being fairy folk. It’s a no-brainer for Hiro to quickly get into SFIT because he’s never felt more safe and secure then being amongst his fellow fairies.
More events occur, but this one is totally left-wing of cannon, and I’m keeping a few secrets to myself.
Idea two is that the Hamada boys are still fairies, but this is a really secret, hush-hush thing that has been passed down their family line for generations. They hide their wings because if they don’t, it’s going to spell certain doom for sure. However, as the events of cannon play out, the Nerd Herd eventually catches Hiro with his wings out when they make a surprise visit with pizza (Tadashi ran down too late to stop them, knowing that Hiro and he will have their wings out whenever they can because they get cramped tucked under their shirts and jackets all day). While the gang is shocked at first, Honey’s the first to gush over how pretty they are, and Fred just starts freaking out because they’re like Wasp from DC comics, and IT’S SO FREAKING COOL! Gogo takes things super chill, and Wasabi needs a minute before he asks for clarification. Everyone accepts the boys, and the pizza party continues as planned.
At the showcase, however, once the fire occurs, Tadashi rushes in again to save Callaghan. However, because of his ability to tell weather fluctuations, he’s able to avoid the flames by quickly throwing off his jacket and punching out his wings to get above the blast (while Hiro suffers a concussion outside, thus making the time distort from his point of view). Tadashi manages to fly over the wreckage, not caring about revealing his secret to his mentor if it means saving a life, but he catches Callaghan in the act. Callaghan, upon seeing Tadashi, captures the fairy to stop him from revealing his plans, but once he gets the young man, he notices the wings.
Callaghan keeps Tadashi locked away under observation because of this new predicament. On one hand, he should have gotten rid of Tadashi to hide his secret, but, on the other, this is his prized student and, as it seemed, a creature no science has ever taken into account. Therefore, he keeps Tadashi hidden while his family, which discovered the charred remains of his jacket at the entrance, assumes the worse and mourns the loss.
After the events of the film, however, while on the island, Hiro is about to jettison out when he picks up on something with his enhanced senses. He detects a certain feeling in the air, something that was missing since Tadashi’s apparent death, and it brings him down from his anger long enough to really analyze it. It’s like a pheramone. He pulls out his own wings and chases it down as his friends chase after him. The feeling gets greater and greater until he locates a room far off, buried deep in the facility. He sees a pin-pad and, with speedy grace, manages to analyze and guess the combinations. When the door is thrown open, another body is there, ready to throw a punch.
Hiro and Tadashi stand their, staring at one another for a long time, before Hiro’s voice cracks and he lunges at his brother. The two embrace in shock, sinking to the floor as Tadashi, who was told his friends and brother were dead after swimming with the fishes, realizes that his brother is ok, that he’s here, safe in his arms. The team eventually catches up, and the tearful reunion ensures.
That night, back at the Lucky Cat Cafe, Cass learns of all of this, and she’s furious and happy all at the same time. She’s insistent that the team let the police handle this, but none of them can accept that. Callaghan is a force to be reckoned with, and there is no way in hell that the police alone can stop him.
So they suit up, and Tadashi, who is healthy as Callaghan didn’t dare want to ruin a specimen of a “new” species, insists on helping. Working quickly, Hiro and Tadashi use the designs for Megabot to enhance Tadashi’s strength in a suit of his own, but, like Hiro, has the ability to unravel his wings (not that the two want to reveal this, but this is just in case). Then, the team rushes out to save the day.
During the battle, Tadashi takes a hit during the battle, and he is knocked out until after Hiro’s gone into the portal. Then, he awakens just as Hiro is in, and he can’t sit by. Throwing bygones to the wind once more, he reveals his wings as he chases after his brother. However, time is distorted in the other realm, so he pops through just as Baymax has taken the hit for Hiro. Realizing that Baymax can’t push the pod out, and Hiro’s wings aren’t strong enough, he has Baymax shrink down (less air resistance) as he and Hiro, together, manage to fly the pod out just in time.
However, when the dust clears, the two are still hovering high above the portal as they let the pod fly into the ground without them. Above, a news copter catches video feed of the two flying, and, quickly, they make their escape while Gogo, Fred, Honey, and Wasabi use the ground chaos to slip out. On the news later, as the nerds, more or less in one piece, sit around the Lucky Cafe watching the news report on their day-saving while sipping Hot Coco from Aunt Cass.
Hiro and Tadashi, thanks to the attention, however, are given a golden opportunity to stretch their wings, no pun intended, more than they have. Whenever they want to fly now, it won’t be in the darkness or behind closed doors, but behind tinted masks above the glittering city scape.

(Excuse me while I become a screaming flailing mess because YES. YES PLEASE TO ALL OF THIS.
Just, okay like I will admit to being hugely biased towards anything where people have wings because I love it so much, but I totally never thought of BH6 cast with fairy wings, and clearly this was a tragedy because THIS IS BEAUTIFUL TO IMAGINE. Maybe when they’ve got their wings hidden away, they’re pressed against their skin so tightly it looks like they have shimmery tattoos.
God I also REALLY LOVE hidden superpowers/secret magical heritage/that kinda stuff, so I’m practically drooling at that second part. Eeeeexcellent)
