All About Fairy Godmothers, an introduction by Emma

“A dream is a wish your heart makes when you’re fast asleep...”

Introduction

Fairy Godmothers are rare fairy talents also known as “fair folk” or “good fairies” by some Mundus communities. Their primary role in fairy society is to serve as ambassadors for fairy communities, building positive relationships to ensure that Pixie Hollows continue to be protected by Mundus governments. In order to fulfill this role, godmother-talents do not live in Hollows but instead among Mundus communities, whether or not those communities have nearby Hollows. Almost every major city around the world has one godmother-talent living among Mundus, whether or not their neighbors know this. Pixie Hollows also usually have a godmother-talent in the nearest town. 

As a side note, the godmother-talent is stereotypically associated with female fairies, but it can appear in fairies of any gender. For this reason, some are bringing back the use of the term “fair folk” to describe godmother-talents.

Godmother-talents are associated with the color blue. Nobody really knows why this is, but most godmother-talents love the color blue and it is one of the early signs of the talent appearing in a child. Some theories posit that blue is a calming or welcoming color, that blue is frequently associated with babies, or that blue is a rare color in nature. 

Other signs of a fairy godmother-talent in a young fairy is uncontrollable appearing and disappearing, usually to someone in need of comfort. As fairy godmothers get older and learn to control their magic better, they are more able to control this particular form of magic. An experienced godmother-talent will use this ability to detect when someone may need a 24-hour wish.

Love and Family

The godmother-talent is not passed down genetically. but rather, appears in a young fairy seemingly at random. However, many believe that a child who shows godmother-talent signals that a Hollow nearby will someday need a fairy godmother to serve as an ambassador for that Hollow. Because godmother-talents are not inherited and also because of the nature of the godmother-talent, fairy godmothers do not enter Promises or have children. They are not prohibited from exploring romantic relationships when they are younger, but when they take on the role of a fairy godmother in adulthood, they are expected to serve as a parental figure for all children who need one. Preventing fairy godmothers from having families of their own is understood as a way of preventing godmother-talents from favoring their own children over others. Typically, godmother-talents do not spend enough time in the Hollow as young adults to form romantic connections with other fairies, and historically, fairy godmothers who have gotten into complicated romantic situations have been those who associated too closely with humans.

Magic

Fairy godmother magic bears some resemblance to sorcery, as it uses a wand and kind of combines reagants for an end product, but the only abstract resource it draws on is wishes. Fairy godmothers need wishes in order to do their magic, that is, the thing they are doing or creating with magic is fueled by the deep desire of the person receiving it. 

For this reason, wish-granting is a short-term form of magic and typically these wishes only last twenty-four hours, potentially longer if the recipient has held onto this wish for a long period of time and has built up the wish. For example, a student may wish to pass an important test, and while the fairy godmother may grant the wish by giving the student photographic memory, that memory will only last a few hours. However, if the student has prepared for this test all of their life, this may last longer. In some rare scenarios, if a wish is extremely important, creates an extraordinary amount of good will, and the fairy is very talented, a wish may last a very long time, even a lifetime.

As a caveat, the general rules of Fairy Godmothers as “good fairies” are that they cannot grand malicious wishes. Their wish-granting is supposed to spread goodness and joy, but inexperienced fairy godmothers may cause trouble when they misread their wish recipient’s intentions or let emotions get the better of them

Infant gifts can only be given in the first 30 days of a newborn’s life because that period is when raw wishing energy is high around them. Everyone who has met them has projected some kind of desire or wish onto this baby, even subconsciously, and so the fairy godmother can draw on those wishes to impart a gift. These gifts often have to do with those hopes and dreams: for example, a baby given the gift of music may receive that gift after a member of the family hopes for a musical child. Again, though, the fairy godmother can occasionally go rogue, with much more unwieldy results and the potential for things to go wrong 

Glossary

Wish: A desire or dream that fuels magic. Godmother-talents seize on wishes in order to do their magic. A powerful godmother-talent may harness their own wishing energy to do simple non-wish-granting magic, but this takes years of practice and yields unimpressive results

Gift: A magical ability given to an infant in their first 30 days of life. A gift is permanent unless reversed by a sorcerer or other powerful magick.

True Love’s Kiss: An act of selflessness or heroism that breaks a curse or activates a gift. Godmother-talents who wish to give a gift that does not manifest until the recipient is mature may add a “true love’s kiss” caveat to the gift, requiring the recipient to become mature or heroic enough to earn the gift. A “true love’s kiss” has, in many famous cases, been symbolized by an actual kiss, but it certainly does not need to take this form. Furthermore, a fairy godmother may bestow a “true love’s kiss” gift on an infant who has been cursed. Godmother-talents do not have the ability to directly reverse a curse, but a “true love’s kiss” gift may serve as a backdoor way to do this (or to “fix” a gift given by an inexperienced godmother-talent who accidentally cursed a child they meant to gift.) For example, a child might be cursed with an ability to see the future, but never be believed. A True Love’s Kiss may come in the form of that child using the curse to protect or help someone, which will then reverse or lessen the curse’s power. Honestly this is a little complicated but you get the idea it’s based on stuff in Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, and Sleeping Beauty I will come back to this if it becomes relevant

Wand: Godmother-talents have wands as their magic is similar in many ways to sorcery, though they have more restrictions. They can only draw on wishes as a source of magic and thus tend not to carry wands around with them in everyday life, saving them for special occasions.

Summoning: An event that requires a fairy godmother to appear and grant a wish. A human may intentionally summon their local fairy godmother, but typically does not realize that they are doing so.

Some made up fairy stuff that you guys can add on to!

Fairies usually live in colonies of at least 30 fairies. Fully grown fairies are usually between 2.5-4 inches tall. They are able to carry lots of magic despite their tiny bodies and are quite proficient with it. They defend themselves with it, build things with it, heal others with it, etc.

Fairies are born without wings and gain them later via magic flowers. The process of getting wings takes 3-4 weeks of being in a magic flower. When a fairy is ready to receive their wings they get "wing sickness". Symptoms of wing sickness include: dizziness, tiredness, weird feeling in back, and being drawn to magic flowers/magic in general. Symptoms get worse the longer a fairy doesn't get into a magic flower. Without wings a fairy looks very similar to a borrower.

Different fairy colonies have varieing opinions on other creatures like humans, giants, borrowers, etc. Some colonies may think any big creatures are bruts that will bring harm to the colony and others might activity talk to humans and giants casually. Some colonies think borrowers are invaders trying to steal things others may try to help passing borrows. Etcetera, ectetera.

I also have an idea of different fairy roles though I feel like it needs more development:

Fighter fairies that protect the colony from threats! Though threats could be a human that touched a magic flower or some water that made someone sick. Either way if it doesn't back off these fairies will enter attack mode! In attack mode it doesn't matter if you were friends you're going to receive some magic ouchie blasts! (Though they will apologize profusely afterwords!) (Also a note if the threat just stands there the fairies will get more aggressive. So if said threat is an inanimate object they will just continue to attack it aggressively)

Comforter fairies that make sure everyone in the colony is feeling good and make sure fighter fairies don't just continuasly attack some water. These faires give off a very calming aura that relaxes others around them. They always feel some want to comfort sad beings even if said being is not a fairy and they are actually afraid of the being.

Scout fairies that look for danger that’s approaching their fairy colony. These fairies have a near constant need to fly and are the most likely to be flying in their sleep. They are also prone to worrying a whole bunch about stuff.

I feel like there should be more roles but I don't know what

Sometimes though rarely a fairy can get a strange condition after getting their wings that causes them to grow a bunch in height over the course of two months. This can be rather scary for them.
