Stars: 4.5/5
I was lucky enough to receive an Advance Reader's copy (my first one!) in a Fairyloot box a few months ago and just got around to reading it.
Ok, wow, wow.
I have two (minuscule) negatives about this book. The rest are positives so let's get this show on the road.
I appreciate the depiction of depression in the main character, Thia. Her depression is quite similar to my own and I liked the idea that she was able to work with it, not necessarily over-come it, but not let it get the best of her, even though she had her Black Days. She is such a strong character and I love it.
Another thing I loved was the strong female representation. All the leaders Thia met with were female. All. Of. Them. Her sister is Queen, the enemy is female, all of the other rulers are also female. I. Love. It. So refreshing.
Also the lgbt+ representation. While Thia isn't represented as lgbtq+ herself, all the relationships around her EXCEPT ONE are lgbtq+ and it's 'normal'! How amazing is this world!
Now onto the magic - Holy SHHH! Amazing. I love love love the depiction of the crows, what they can do and the bond she has with them. The opening chapter is quite capturing.
With that, i'll move onto plot... here's my first problem. I didn't really get into the story until chapter 7. I know what you're thinking... Claudia, you're being too critical. I said it was minuscule didn't I?! Yeah, well, it wasn't that capturing until then.
I'll mention my second personal, small problem. The love triangle. Now, while I usually don't mind the trope, this one left me unsatisfied but i'm being biased. That's all i'll say. I do like the outcome, however.
Overall, I loved the plot, the twists and turns, every nook and cranny of this story and even though this book technically isn't out yet, i'm WAITING for the next one.
Also... Ericien.
That's all.
I recommend for 12+. Minor PG/M themes - just depression which isn't something children should be protected from and some minor injuries. Nothing serious. If you're interested, go for it no matter your age.
