12 Days of Christmas -- Family Devotion

On the sixth day of Christmas, the geese were a-laying. One of the incredible things about geese their devotion to family. They are one of the few species in the animal world that mate for life, and the goslings stay with their parents for at least a year.

Showing devotion to one’s mate, family, and chosen family (i.e. friends) is a pretty great goal for the holidays and new year. Of course, the most obvious when it comes to your mate is loyalty and fidelity.

That means not only making that pledge yourself, but demanding it of your partner as well. This goes back to the fifth day and the idea of self-worth. Blind devotion isn’t what’s called for her. Devotion to those you love who love you in return.

It also means working to put your partner and your children (if you have them) before yourself. Making sure that their needs are on equal footing with your own.

For your family, how much time to you spend staying in touch with them? Do you call, text, write? Do you let them know that you are not only thinking of them, but that you love them? Do you make an effort to see them and spend time with them or do you simply say you’ll “do it later”, when it’s more convenient?

Lastly, your friends, your family of choice. Do you give as much effort as you get? Are you there for them or do you simply require that they be there for you? Are you generous with time and careful with your judgment and criticism?

The dictionary defines devotion as “love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause.“ Let that love, loyalty, and enthusiasm spill out of you and onto your family and friends this holiday and new year.
